CLASS PREPARATIONS and ASSIGNMENTS:
1. Commitment & Class Engagement
Learning a foreign language requires a lot of practice, so in this course you are expected to do a lot of pairwork and to actively participate in class discussion. Your class engagement is assessed daily and scores will be determined by how actively and seriously you participate in class. Please note that class engagement involves more than merely sitting in class; asking a question, speaking in Japanese as much as possible, making eye contact, working with different classmates, etc. are essential to succeed in the course.
[1] Read the textbook, do the workbook, and self-correct your work daily
[2] Arrive 5-10 minutes before the class begins and review hiragana/katakana/kanji [3] Participate ACTIVELY in class. Use Japanese in class.
[4] Don’t be shy! Don’t hesitate to ask questions. (Nothing is wrong with making mistakes.)
Class will be conducted assuming that students have reviewed the previous class and have done the corresponding workbook pages up to the date. This course encourages you to study at home for at least 1 hour every day.
Arriving late or leaving early is disruptive to the entire class; two late arrivals or early departures will be counted as one absence. 3 absences will result in your final grade being lowered by one letter grade.
It is your responsibility to catch up with any materials you missed during your absence. Get your classmate’s phone number and ask him/her to save the handouts and/or information given in the class you missed.
2. Workbook Assignments
You are expected to read the textbook as assigned and do the corresponding workbook pages everyday. Be sure to check every item (everything you wrote) on each page and self-correct your work (if
necessary) with the answer keys daily. Answer keys for the workbook assignments will be posted on our class website: https://sites.google.com/site/smcnihongo1/ Use a different color pen (red, blue, etc. but not black) when correcting your work, so that you can easily see your mistakes when you study before the test. (This allows you to study more effectively; you’ll know what you should focus on!) Completing the workbook in daily increments will lead to a better retention of what you learn. Avoid doing a whole chapter at once, because that does not help you learn anything.
Note that everyday preparation saves your time for review and you feel good in class!
You will submit your workbook assignments on the date indicated in the class schedule. Your work will be graded based on how seriously you take this assignment:
+ 20 points: excellent job with thorough self-correction (using a different color pen)
15 points: complete, but average or with no self-correction using a different color pen
− 1-14 points: incomplete, not serious
Your workbook assignment that is not checked with a different color pen, even if it is complete, will result in a C. Late homework will NOT be accepted. You must place your workbook pages stapled together on the instructor’s desk before the class begins. (You will rip off the assigned pages from the workbook. If you don’t want to rip off your workbook pages, you can use photocopied pages.) Please put your workbook pages in order by page number and staple them at the LEFT top. An unstapled submission will result in a reduction of 2 points! Assignments that are turned in without class attendance will result in a reduction of 10 points. Homework assignments done during class will receive NO credit. Writing only the answers on separate sheets of paper will NOT be accepted.
3. Video Skits
In a group of 3 or 4, write a script for skits focusing on new grammar patterns introduced in the recent chapter. Then, memorize the script and practice your skits until you become able to speak fluently. Grammar accuracy is a big part of your score! After your group practiced speaking, film your skits (on campus, etc.), make a short video and upload it to your YouTube account. Submit the link through
Moodle, so that the class can watch your video!
Each student must have at least 5 lines. Greetings, Hai (= Yes), Iie (= No), A~ soo desu ka (= Is that so? Really?), etc. are not counted as one line. It is required that everyone in your group will appear in the video. (If you don’t appear in the video, your performance cannot be graded, and therefore you will receive no points.) Use only vocabulary and grammar that we have learned so far. You are NOT allowed to use any vocabulary and grammar that have not been introduced in this course, because if you use them, your classmates will not be able to understand your skit.
4. Short Essay
There will be short essay assignments. Topics and details will be announced in class.
5. Lab Assignments
One hour Lab work per week (a minimum of 15 hours) is required. Please go to the language lab (D219) and complete the Lab work assigned for each week. There are a variety of activities (grammar, conjugation exercises, listening comprehension exercises, videos, kanji/vocabulary practice, etc.) that help you master what you are currently learning in class. For details, see “Lab Assignments” on our Google site: https://sites.google.com/site/smcnihongo1/lab-assignments
The Lab work is essential in order to improve your listening proficiency, which will prepare you to do well in class and on the tests. The instructor will periodically review a report on your Lab work (how many hours you have done, when, etc.) and 10 points will be given on each due date if you have completed the total required lab hours by the day indicated on the schedule.
6. Quizzes and Exams
There will be 5 vocabulary quizzes, 1 hiragana test, 1 katakana test, and a chapter test after each chapter. All tests are cumulative. There will be 2 oral tests. A guide for oral tests will be distributed in class.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY
Academic dishonesty (plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration, cheating, etc.) will not be tolerated. A student who has violated the academic integrity will be penalized and a permanent record of the violation will be kept on the student’s record. No second chance will be given. It is students’ responsibilities to read the Code of Academic Conduct, Honor Code, and Rules of Student Conduct. For the detailed explanation on academic honesty policy, please visit
http://www.smc.edu/StudentServices/StudentJudicialAffairs/Pages/What-you-should-know.aspx to download full text.
NO MAKE-UP POLICY:
No make-up will be given for vocabulary quizzes, hiragana/katakana quizzes, chapter tests and oral tests except for medical emergencies accompanied by an official documentation from an appropriate healthcare professional or for legitimate reasons as defined under college policy (such as jury duty).
*If you anticipate a legitimate absence on the date of a quiz/test, you MUST notify the instructor and request a make-up IN ADVANCE, not afterwards. Also, please be advised that any make-up test scores will result in a 10% automatic deduction.
*** NO MAKE UP WILL BE GIVEN FOR ORAL TESTS & THE FINAL EXAM. ***
You MUST take oral tests/final exam on the scheduled day, not before/after the day. Please make your winter plans carefully. Leaving for your hometown or home country before the final exam, for example, will not be an acceptable excuse.
CLASSROOM PLEDGE:
Japanese culture emphasizes concern for others. Please be respectful of the classroom environment and refrain from behavior that might be disturbing or distracting.
1. Cell phone Please turn off your cell phone. The use of any electronic device (e.g., cell phones, iPad, iPod, laptop computers, etc.) during class is strictly prohibited.
**NO PHONE ON THE DESK/ON YOUR LAP DURING CLASS** You must place your phone in your bag, backpack, etc. If you check text messages/emails, if your phone rings, and/or if you use your phone during class (= when the instructor sees your phone), you will be penalized by a deduction of 5 points each time you use it.
★You don’t need your phone to learn Japanese in class.★
2. Food Eating candy, food, etc. and chewing gum are NOT allowed during class.
E-MAIL COMMUNICATION:
Please note that the college is only going to communicate with you through your SMC email address ([email protected]). Please check your SMC email account regularly, so that you will not miss important announcements.
GRADE LOGS:
Please keep track of your daily scores on the class schedule/grade logs, so that you can tell how you are doing in the class at all times. A progress report will be made after Chapter 3 Test. Make sure that your total is correct.
