The Internet has been improved to meet new requirements since it was developed and deployed. For example, there were only a few applications such as mail, ftp, and telnet at first. A lot of new applications have been created since then. Today, World Wide Web has become a tool indispensable for daily life. The Internet did not consider security at first. Several security mechanisms and protocols have been developed. Today, people can safely enjoy shopping through the Internet. On the other hand, not only computers but also things will communicate with each other in the future Internet This is so-called Internet of Things. Redesigning the Internet from scratch (clean-slate approach) has lately attracted considerable attention. Based on these activities, an editorial committee for the special section was organized to publish these new discussion items. For the call for papers, 28 papers were submitted to this special section, and 6 of them are accepted for publication through the review process. The accepted papers include a wide variety of topics in the field of the Internet research.
