The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm

はじめに

本稿は、Norman Hunter（1899-1995）の代表作ともいえる The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm（1933）（以下、本作を指す場合 Branestawm）の初出につ いて、従来の説明に訂正を加えようとするものである。

とても賢いがいつも上の空なブレインストーム教授を主人公とするこの作品は1933 年に The Bodley Head（John Lane）から出版され、Puffin Books、 Red Fox と出版 元を変えながら今日まで版を重ねている息の長い作品である。続編として Professor Branestawm’s Treasure Hunt（1937）、Broadcast Echoes と い う シ リ ー ズ の 1 冊

（No.27）として、Professor Branestawm Stories（1939）という選集が出版¹。その 後、第二次世界大戦後に作者が南アフリカ滞在中は出版がなく、イギリスに帰国後 The Peculiar Triumph of Professor Branestawm（1970）が出版。以降、断続的に新 作が発表されていった。1969年にテレビドラマ化し、出版80周年を記念して2014年に は新たなテレビシリーズが制作されている。

そもそもこの作品をここまで有名にしたのは、BBC ラジオの番組 Children’s Hour での朗読の影響が大きいという。Branestawm の献辞は作品を朗読したラジオパーソ ナリティのひとり、‘Ajax’に捧げられていることからもそれがうかがえる²。また、

大部な文学事典 Something about the Author や The Oxford Companion to Children’s Literature といった児童文学事典などの、いくつかの主要な事典類にも以下のような 説明がなされている。

Based on stories originally written for the BBC’s Children’s Hour and read aloud by Ajax, one of the programmer’s favorite ‘uncles’, ....³

His first and best book, The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm, appeared in 1933, based on stories originally written for the BBC’s Children’s Hour. These were read aloud by Ajax, one of the programmer’s special uncles,

and proved very popular.⁴

Hunter wrote several other books, but none approached the success of the Professor Branestawm stories which, incidentally, made their original appearance in BBC ‘Children’s Hour’ in the form of radio stories told by

‘Ajax’(to whom the book was dedicated).⁵

The “Professor Branestawm” tales were originally introduced as radio stories on BBC’s “Children’s Hour” radio program.⁶

Stories about him were read on BBC Children’s Hour, and then appeared in The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm (1933), ....⁷

PROFESSOR BRANESTAWM made his debut on the radio but it was not long before the inaudible part of Norman Hunter’s humour, his use of comic spelling, became apparent from the printed page.⁸

以 上 に 共 通 し て い る の は、 ラ ジ オ の 番 組 Children’s Hour の た め に Professor Branestawm の物語が書かれたとする点だ。ここが本論の問題とするところである。

1965年に The Bodley Head から出たハードカバー版のカバー見返しに、作者が

‘The Beginning of Branestawm’なる短文を寄せている。そこには次のような文章 がある。

The first Professor Branestawm stories appeared in the 1920s in a lovely children’s magazine called The Merry-Go-Round. I then sent the stories to the BBC who broadcast them on Children’s Hour and Professor Branestawm soon became a regular fortnightly feature on this program.⁹

1920年代に雑誌 The Merry-Go-Round に掲載後、それを BBC に送ったとあるの だ。これに近い記述は次の文章に見られる。

Branestawm originally starred in several children’s magazine stories, which Hunter later published in a 1933 collection, The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm. An instant hit, it was serialized on the BBC radio show,

“Children’s Hour,” ....¹⁰

この表現では複数の雑誌に発表したものをまとめて出版したようにも受け取れる が、雑誌連載が先にあるとする点で、これまで見てきたものとは異なっている。ほか に雑誌掲載という点に触れている事典や研究書、論文の類は見当たらない。唯一の例 外は、1989年に大日本図書から吉田映子（1937-1997）の翻訳で出版された『ブレイ ンストーム教授大あわて』である。このあとがきにはこの作品が「一九二〇年代にイ ギリスの児童誌「メリー・ゴー・ラウンド」に掲載され、ラジオの子ども番組で放送 され」（257）たとある。おそらく吉田氏は、先の The Bodley Head 版のカバー見返 しの記述を参照したものと思われる。彼女はほかにも、単行本 Dust-up at the Royal Disco and Other Incredible Stories（1975、1978）のペーパーバック版に掲載されて いる作者の架空インタビューを参照しているが、上記に引用したような事典類は参照 していないと思われる。

本稿では以下、Branestawm の雑誌掲載、ラジオ放送について具体的に明らかに し、両者の齟齬を正していくこととする。

1 － 1 ．The Merry-Go-Round

まず確認するべきは、The Merry-Go-Round という雑誌である。現在その全貌を 調査中であるが、残念ながら日本国内の図書館での所蔵は確認できない。イギリスで もわずか三館が所蔵しているのみである¹¹。入手が困難で、筆者が所有しているもの も、すべてではないため¹²、全体の閲覧はできていない不備をご了承いただきたい。

ごく簡単に説明すると、The Merry-Go-Round は1923年11月に Basil Blackwell 社 が創刊した月刊誌であり、毎号約40ページ、 1 シリング。一年分を綴じられるよう特 製ファイルが別売りされていた。Vol.5まではファイリング用に二穴が開いている。

Vol.1と Vol.2の編集者は Rose Fyleman（1877-1957）。Vol.3以降は Hugh Chesterman

（1887-1941）が担当。Vol.5までは Basil Blackwell 社の出版だが、Vol.6になると紙面 から Basil Blackwell 社の文字が消え、手紙の送り先住所が Basil Blackwell 社の所在 地 Oxford から Islip（Oxfordshire）になり、紙面が 2 段組みになるという変化があっ た。このことから、The Merry-Go-Round は途中で Basil Blackwell 社から離れて刊 行されたと考えられる。新たな出版社名は記載されていないのだが、Islip は、Vol.3 以降を編集した Hugh Chesterman の住居地であったことから¹³、Chesterman が個人 で刊行していた可能性がある。終刊については確実なところが不明だが、所蔵館の書

誌情報から判断すると1932年まで続いていたようである。創刊号は人気作家であった A. A. Milne（1882-1956）の詩“The Dormouse and the Doctor”が巻頭を飾ってい る。Fyleman の依頼が、Milne に子どもの本（詩）を書き始めさせるきっかけとなっ たことは有名である¹⁴。

また月刊誌と同時に創刊されたのが年刊誌 Joy Street で、こちらの方が知られてい るだろう¹⁵。Joy Street と The Merry-Go-Round は姉妹誌という位置づけにあり、執 筆陣に重なりも多いが、Joy Street が詩と物語、豪華な挿絵で構成されているのに対 し、The Merry-Go-Round は詩や物語（連載を含む）はもちろん、戯曲の台本あり、

紙製舞台装置の付録あり、楽譜あり、読者からの手紙や詩のコンテストがあり、クロ スワード・パズル、推薦図書案内もあるなど、雑誌らしく内容は多岐におよんでい る。

1 － 2 ．The Merry-Go-Round と Norman Hunter

さて次に、The Merry-Go-Round において Professor Branestawm の物語がいつ 連載されていたのかについて見ていきたい。そもそも Hunter が物語を書き始めた のは1920年代であり¹⁶、Blackie’s Children’s Annual¹⁷や、Sunday Graphic、Evening News、Daily Express などの新聞、Boy’s Own Paper や Homes and Gardens などの 雑誌に文章を寄せていたことがわかっている¹⁸。

表 1 は筆者所有の The Merry-Go-Round に Norman Hunter の作品が掲載された号 の一覧である。網掛けが Professor Branestawm 作品である。

The Merry-Go-Round と Norman Hunter の関係は創刊年 Vol.1, No.10（1924, August）

に“How to Give a Conjuring Entertainment”という手品の手ほどきをした文章か ら始まる。この時代 Hunter はプロの奇術師としてステージに上がっており、手品 に 関 す る 著 書 Simplified Conjuring for All（1923） も あ る。 そ の 後、Vol.3, No.11

（1926, September）に“The King’s Crown”という物語詩を掲載、Vol.4, No.2（1926, December）に“The Princess Who Wanted Crumpets”という創作フェアリー・テ イルを掲載し、以下断続的に王様や女王様、お姫様たちが主人公となる物語を発表す る。これらの作品は現在のところ、単行本への収録が確認されていない。

そして、Vol.6, No.5（1929, March）に、‘Professor Branestawm Just Arrived’と いう見出しでその登場が予告される。‘Look out for him next month.’という文に 続き、L. S. Haywood の挿絵で教授の全身図が描かれ、‘Who is he? Where has he come from? What is he going to do? Next month’s The Merry-Go-Round will tell

you all about him.’（168） とある。そして翌号、Vol.6, No.6（1929, April）に第 1 話

“The Professor Invents a Machine”が掲載された。挿絵は L. S. Haywood。文末に は‘There will be another adventure next month.’（222）とあり、連載されることが 明記されている。続いて、No.7（May）に“The Wild Waste-Paper”、No.8（June）

は Professor Branestawm ではなく、“King Paper Face”という創作フェアリー・

テイルが掲載（The Dribblesome Teapots and Other Incredible Stories 所収）され る。そして、No.9（July）には“The Professor Borrows a Book”、No.10（August）

は 掲 載 が な く、No.11（September） に“Burglars!”、No.12（October） に は“The Screaming Clocks”と続く。これらは単行本の 1 話から 5 話までと一致している。雑 誌掲載時と単行本では、語句に多少の差異が認められるのだが、内容に相違はないの で、ここでは割愛する。

Vol.6から Professor Branestawm の物語が登場するわけだが、先に見たように、こ の号はおそらく The Merry-Go-Round の刊行が Basil Blackwell 社から離れた年であ

る。あくまで個人的な印象だが Professor Branestawm の物語は、創作フェアリー・

テイルや動物物語、歴史物語などが多かったこれまでの The Merry-Go-Round には 見られないタイプの作品であるため、雑誌の新たな方向性を探る試みだったのではな いかと思われる。

Vol.7（1929-1930）以降は入手できず全体が未確認であるが、不揃いで所有してい る Vol.8, No.8（1931, June）には“The Secret Document”（The Dribblesome Teapots and Other Incredible Stories 所収）、Vol.8, No.9（1931, July）には“The Imperial Tea Set”（The Home-Made Dragon 所収）が掲載されているため、この前後も断続的に Hunter が Branestawm やほかの作品を寄せていたものと推察される。

また、Joy Street の No.9（1931）にも“The Bad Barons of Crashbania”という作 品を書いている（挿絵は Eve Garnett）。こちらは同号に掲載されていた、Gertrude Monro Higgs の“Kings and Queens”（挿絵は Thomas Derrick）と合本形式で Basil Blackwell 社から単行本として出版されている。Hunter の創作フェアリー・テイルも 数が多いのだが、ここではこれ以上の言及は避けることとする。

2 ．BBC Children’s Hour

次に確認したいのがラジオ番組 Children’s Hour での Branestawm 作品の放送時 期である。Children’s Hour はイギリスの放送局、BBC が1922年12月に放送を開始 した夕方の子ども向けラジオ番組である。BBC のウェブサイトのひとつ‘Genome BETA Radio Times 1923-2009’<http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/> では、ラジオ番組の 雑誌 Radio Times に掲載された1923年から2009年までの番組プログラムが検索でき る。一部は全ページデジタル化されてウェブ上で閲覧できるようになっているが、多 くはテキストで番組プログラムが表示される。雑誌の番組欄をそのままテキスト化し ているため、雑誌上の誤字脱字が残っているところも多い。また、元になっている雑 誌の番組欄そのものが、限られたスペースに各局の終日プログラムを掲載しているこ とから、そこには取捨選択があり必ずしも番組の全容が掲載されているわけではな い。日によっては番組名しか記されておらず内容が全くわからないこともある。よっ て、今回の検索から判明したことはあくまで、雑誌に掲載されていた部分的な内容で ある。誤字脱字によって検索されなかった場合もあるだろう。その点ご了承いただき たい。

まず、‘Branestawm’および‘Norman Hunter’で検索をかけ、精査したところ 300件近く該当した¹⁹。詳細は後述するが、1928年を皮切りに1930年からプログラム上

で名前が多く登場するようになるが1937年 7 月を最後に‘Branestawm’、‘Norman Hunter’は登場せず、次に登場するのは1949年のことである。

以下の表 2 は雑誌 The Merry-Go-Round での掲載（表 1 ）と照合できた作品が、

初めてプログラム上に登場した日（初朗読とはいいきれない）である²⁰。番組プログ ラムをそのまま反映したため、大文字と小文字の表記、冠詞の有無や相違、スペルミ スと思しき単語も見受けられたが、確認が取れない限りそのままとしている。網掛け 部分が Professor Branestawm 作品である。

上 記 に よ る と Hunter の 物 語 が ラ ジ オ に 登 場 す る の は1928年 3 月26日、5PY Plymouth 放送局である。作品名は“The Barley Sugar Twisters of Candy Town”

これは、The Merry-Go-Round, Vol.4, No.3（1927, January）に掲載された作品であ る。その後、 9 月と11月に初出不明の作品“The Queen’s Nougat”、“The Seventeen Toast-Racks”が放送され、年内に計 5 回 Hunter の作品がラジオに登場している。

1929年になると、 2 月に2LO London と5XX Daventry 放送局で“How the Duke Looked After Himself” が 放 送 さ れ る。 こ れ は The Merry-Go-Round, Vol.6, No.3

（1929, January）に掲載されている。続いて、初出不明の作品と The Merry-Go- Round 掲載の作品が放送され、計10回登場する。

そして、1930年 1 月 1 日に“The Professor Invents a Machine”（The Merry-Go- Round, Vol.6, No.6（1929, April）掲載、単行本第 1 章）が放送された。‘We venture

to make adventures and, with the help of PROFESSOR BRANESTAWM, discover some are incredible. No. 1, The Professor Invents a Machine（Norman Hunter）’と あり、これが検索される中で Professor Branestawm の最初の放送となる。その後、

1930年 1 月 9 日に5PY Plymouth で“THE WILD WASTE PAPER”が放送。（The Merry-Go-Round, Vol.6, No.7（1929, May）掲載、単行本第 2 章）、1930年 1 月20日 に2LO London と5XX Daventry で“The Story of King Paperface” が 放 送（The Merry-Go-Round, Vol.6, No.8（1929, June）掲載）。1930年 1 月28日に“the Professor borrows a book”（The Merry-Go-Round, Vol.6, No.9（1929, July） 掲 載、 単 行 本 第 3 章 ） と 続 く。1930年 2 月20日 に は、5PY Plymouth で“THE SCREAMING CLOCKS”（The Merry-Go-Round, Vol.6, No.12（1929, October）掲載、単行本第 5 章）、1930年 3 月 3 日に、2LO London と5XX Daventry で“Burglars!”（The Merry- Go-Round, Vol.6, No.11（1929, September）掲載、単行本第 4 章）が放送される。朗 読者は無記載の方が多いが、献辞や事典類でも言及のある‘Ajax’とほかの人物の 名も散見される。1930年は Professor Branestawm 以外の作品も含めると27件。1931 年 は32件、1932年 は43件、1933年 は50件、1934年 は29件 と 続 く。Hunter が 隔 週 で 放送されたと書いていることと、The Dribblesome Teapots の前身、Larky Legends

（1937）の表紙カバー見返し²¹からも定期的に放送されていた旨がうかがえる。人気 があったからこそ、番組表にも記載があったのだろう。

雑誌と番組プログラムの照合ができたものは、Branestawm からはこの 5 作になる が、この結果から Hunter の記述にある「雑誌に掲載されたのちラジオで放送された」

ことを証明するに十分であると思われる。また、Professor Branestawm に限らず、

The Merry-Go-Round に掲載された別の作品が朗読されていることからも、既存の 作品をラジオで朗読するというパターンがあったと考えてよいだろう。

しかし、すべてがそうであると断定することはできない。既存の作品が朗読される 中、初出が確認できない作品も朗読されているからだ。これらがラジオ用の書き下ろ しである可能性も否めない。

表 3 は、Branestawm 収録作品で、The Merry-Go-Round での掲載確認が取れてい ないものがラジオに初登場した日である。これらは未確認の The Merry-Go-Round に掲載されている可能性もある。また、単行本第 7 章の‘The Professor’のみ、ラ ジオ放送が確認できない、もしくはプログラム上に記載がないようである。

ほかにも、‘A Story of Professor Branestawm’や‘Another Adventure of Professor Branestawm’、‘A new NORMAN HUNTER Story’というプログラムも見られ、何 が朗読されたのか不明なものも多い。

雑誌の検証も番組プログラムの調査も、それなりに不備があることは否めないが、

以上のことを踏まえると、最初に確認した Professor Branestawm の物語が「もとも とはラジオ朗読用に執筆された」という事典類の記述は一作目に関しては厳密には誤 りであり、訂正すべきであることがわかる。Hunter 自身も述べているように、雑誌 に連載されたものがラジオで朗読され、のちに単行本となったのである。この誤解は The Merry-Go-Round の研究がなされていないことに始まり、単行本の出版がラジ オでの朗読の後であることと、何よりラジオの影響力の大きさによって生まれたもの だと推察される。

ただし、The Merry-Go-Round のすべてを確認していないことや、雑誌が1932年 をもって終刊を迎えたらしいことを考えると、ラジオでの人気により Hunter がその 後 Professor Branestawm の新作をラジオ用に書き下ろした可能性も否めない。実 際、単行本二作目、三作目の作品も刊行以前に多数ラジオで放送されているからだ。

では、なぜ Hunter の物語が放送されたのかを考えてみたい。Hunter 自身が BBC に送ったとあるが、もうひとつ手掛かりがある。Children’s Hour では The Merry- Go-Round で連載されている作品を早くから朗読していたのである²²。Vol.1と Vol.2 の編集者 Rose Fyleman がみずからラジオに出演し、掲載作品を朗読していたの だ。前出のサイトを検索した限りでは、1924年 2 月29日に Mabel Marlowe の“The Wiggly Weasel”（The Merry-Go-Round, Vol.1, No.2掲載）がその最初である。The Merry-Go-Round の創刊が1923年11月であるから、創刊直後に朗読されたといえる。

以降、断続的にバック・ナンバーから作品が朗読されている。ただし、Fyleman が 編集から外れた1926年以降、The Merry-Go-Round からの朗読は減少しており、

1928年ごろにはプログラム上に‘from The Merry-Go-Round’という表記も見られ

なくなる。The Merry-Go-Round に執筆した作家の名前や、作品名で検索すればも う少し厳密なことが判明するだろうが、今回は調査していない。ひとついえること は、Children’s Hour と The Merry-Go-Round は当初より関係が深かったらしいと いうことだ。その流れに Hunter の作品も含まれているのかもしれない。ただし、

Hunter は、自分で BBC に「作品を送った」と記していることから、これが個人での ことなのか、出版社を通じてのことなのかという疑問も残る。しかし、これほど頻繁 に The Merry-Go-Round の作品が朗読されていたにもかかわらず、この雑誌の存在 が現在では知られていないこと、そして今回検証したような誤解が生じていることは 残念である。両者のタイアップともいえるこの手法は大変興味深く、当時のイギリス の児童文学周辺をつまびらかにする上でも見逃せないものと思われる。

終わりに

繰り返しになるが、本稿における調査は以下の点で完全ではない。まず、Children’s Hour のプログラム確認がウェブサイトの番組欄のみであるということ。このサイト は信頼できるものであるが、全番組プログラムが検索できるとはいえ、先に述べたよ うな事情もあり、今後詳細が修正、補足されていく計画もある。改定されていけば、

今回の調査を補完する新たな事実が発見されるかもしれない。次に、The Merry-Go- Round も全号を調査できておらず、Professor Branestawm のどの話が The Merry- Go-Round に掲載されたのかを完全には解明できていない。Something about the Author の Obituary に見られた、「いくつかの雑誌に掲載された物語」という記述の 裏づけもできていない。以上のような不備はあるが、Professor Branestawm の物語 は雑誌連載が初出であるという、この埋もれていた事実を掘り起こすことができた拙 稿に多少の意義は認められるだろう。
