FOREWORD

Special Section on Electronic Displays

Electronic displays permeate everyday life. We use smartphones, tablets, handheld game consoles, televi- sions, PCs, etc. Also we see digital signage, public displays, and vehicle displays, etc. As the electronic displays are expanding in many fields, much attention is being paid to the development of flexible dis- play technologies, the development of virtual and augmented reality technologies. Not only fabrication technologies but also comprehensive systems are indispensable to improve electronic displays, including driving circuit, signal processing, software technologies, contents supply, business models, etc. In such trends, research and development must be executed in multiple fields. On behalf of the Technical Commit- tee of the Electronic Information Displays (EID), we would like to prepare this special section as a place to publish such research and development on electronic displays.

International Display Workshops (IDW) is one of the international conferences representative of the display field in the world and have been held in Japan every year from 1994. In particular, it features many academic and scientific valuable presentations and discussions with many participants from all over the world. The 22nd International Display Workshops (IDW ’15) was held in Otsu Prince Hotel on December 9–11, 2015. Some presentations in IDW ’15 were selected by the program committee of IDW ’15 and recommended to submit corresponding papers to this special section. The submitted papers were carefully reviewed, and some papers expressing well the recent progress of display technologies including display devices and materials are published. There are 10 papers consisting of 9 regular papers and 1 brief papers in this special section. We hope that these papers are useful to further research on electronic displays.

Finally, as a guest editor-in-chief in this special section, I would like to express my deepest thanks to all the authors for their submission of interesting papers, and also appreciates all the members of the editorial committee listed below for their intense efforts and remarkable contributions for this special section.

Editorial Committee Members Guest Editors:

Takashi Kojiri (ZEON) Guest Associate Editors:

Mutsumi Kimura (Ryukoku Univ.), Hiroko Kominami (Shizuoka Univ.), Munekazu Date (NTT), Masahiro Yamaguchi (Tokyo Inst. of Tech.), Rumiko Yamaguchi (Akita Univ.), Ryosuke Nonaka (Toshiba), Hiroyuki Nitta (Japan Display), Mitsuru Nakata (NHK)

Tomokazu Shiga

(The Univ. of Electro-Communications),Guest Editor-in-Chief

Tomokazu Shiga(Senior Member) received his B. Eng., M. Eng., and D. Eng. de- grees in electronic engineering from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan, in 1994, 1996, and 1999, respectively. He is now an Associate Professor of the same university.

His research interests include low-pressure gas-discharge devices, display devices, display sys- tems, and human factor for displays. Dr. Shiga is a member of the IEICE, the ITE, and the Society for Information Display.
