Design as it is.

In 2014 we have a new perception of design.

Nowadays, design is necessary to speak about everything: One of the

most famous computer companies, America’s first black president,

etc. Furthermore, through the tragic and unforeseen events of the

past I have recognized the value of design and its ability to solve social

issues. These modern rediscoveries have a major impact on design.

Therefore it becomes impossible to make a shape without first noticing

the relationship to its surroundings. The definition of design has been

updated - this is a “new era of design.”

Design is currently going through a transition. In the past, it was about

creating a shape but it is changing to show the invisible, highlighting

its surroundings and their relationships. The meaning of the word is

expanding and design is becoming more inclusive; it reveals “new

relationships” by the discovery of a “new form”, which becomes the new

role of design.

“DESIGN AS IT IS” holds true to a few fundamental ideas: “Design that

does not create a form” that does not change the form of the things

that exist. Furthermore, “Design that does not make a shape” but

evolves only by pure relationship with its environment is an integral

factor. These new concerns are sprouting in the new vision of design,

even in the academic field.

“Designing as everyone already knows” is a concept of overwhelming

prevalence in our cognition. Only novelty is the key to provide a fresh

awareness beyond these design stereotypes. “Design which does

not create a form” begins to be a natural movement among modern

designers, actualizing creation of pure relationship.

“DESIGN AS IT IS.” illustrates this relationship between novelty and

known properties. This exhibition is made to incite thinking about future

relationships in the creation of design.

Norihiko Terayama studied architecture and product design in Japan at KIDI (Kanazawa International Design Institute). Later he expanded his education at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. Gaining professional experience at studio Richard Hutten and MVRDV at the internship, Terayama went on and founded his own design company: “studio note”.

Founded in 2004 by Koichi Suzuno and Shinya Kamuro, TORAFU ARCHITECTS employs a working approach based on architectural thinking. Works by the duo include a diverse range of products, from architectural design to interior design for shops, exhibition space design, product design, spatial installations and film making. Their mainworks include 'TEMPLATE IN CLASKA', 'NIKE 1LOVE', 'HOUSE IN KOHOKU', 'airvase' and 'Gulliver Table'. ‘Light Loom (Canon Milano Salone 2011)’ was awarded the Grand Prize of the Elita Design Award. In 2011 TORAFU published the 'airvase book' and 'TORAFU ARCHITECTS 2004-2011 Idea + Process' (by BIJUTSU SHUPPAN-SHA CO., LTD.). And in 2012, a picture book titled ‘TORAFU's Small City Planning' (by Heibonsha Limited) was released.

Born 1979 in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka, Suzuki graduated from the Department of Design at Tokyo Zokei University in 2001. His video installation Perspective of the Globe-Jungle, which utilized spinning playground equipment, won first prize for the year at NHK Digital Stadium. Since exhibiting his work at the Ars Electronica Festival―the media art event in Linz, Austria―Suzuki has been invited to show his work at numerous exhibitions and art festivals in Japan and abroad. In 2002, he received the Grand Prize at the Philip Morris Art Awards for Inter-reflection. Blinking Leaves, released in 2003 at the Spiral Garden, continues to be shown at art museums and public spaces. In 2009, Suzuki was in charge of art direction for the project Digital Public Art in Haneda Airport: Please Watch Your Step. Zipper Ship attracted a great deal of attention when shown at Setouchi Triennale 2010. The first collection of his work, Mabataki to Habataki [Blinking and Flapping] has been published by Seigensha Art Publishing.
