A N ote on Collective Acceleration of Barium Ions in a Preformed Anode Plasma

I n a p r e v i o u s p a p e r
1)( h e r e a f t e r t o be r e f e r r e d a s 1 ) were r e p o r t e d t h e f i r s t e x p e r i m e n t a l r e s u l t s on c o l l e c t i v e a c c e l e r a t i o n o f barium i o n s i n a preformed barium anode plasma by an i n t e n s e r e l a t i v i s t i c e l e c t r o n beam ( I R E B ) . I t was shown t h a t some barium i o n s had been a c c e l e r a t e d up t o a peak e n e r g y o f 2 7 0 MeV u s i n g a 5 0 0 kV‑16 kA‑10 n s IREB s o u r c e . This N o t e r e p o r t s t h a t barium i o n s were a c c e l e r a t e d up t o a peak e n e r g y o f a b o u t 1 . 1 GeV u s i n g t h e same IREB s o u r c e .
Experimental a p p a r a t u s , a s c h e m a t i c diagram o f which i s shown i n F i g . l , was t h e same a s d e s c r i b e d i n 1 , e x c e p t t h a t t h e l e n g t h o f t h e d r i f t t u b e was s h o r t e n e d by 3 0 cm and t h a t t h e c a p a c i t a n c e o f t h e power s u p p l y f o r t h e plasma gun was changed from 62.5μF t o 1 6 μF.
