I found an interesting story about one invention on the Internet. That is *Lumo Board. It was thought by Nicola, a high school girl in South Africa. She worked hard to*solve a problem in her town.
One day, Nicola saw a place in her town from a car when she went home. There were a lot of poor people who lived in small houses in the place. They didnʼt have enough clean water or
*electricity. Many houses didnʼt have any lights. The roads around them werenʼt good. Then Nicola thought of*rescue workers. She wondered, [ ] ? Can the sick people get to a hospital before it is too late?
Nicola began to study the poor peopleʼs lives there. She and her friends asked
(A)some questions to the people. Nicolaʼs team found that the people had to wait for rescue workers for a long time because it was difficult for the workers to find the houses in the dark places.
Nicola thought, What do the people need? If rescue workers find the house easily, they will get to the house faster. Then she got an idea from a number which each house has. She thought, If the house has the number with a light on the door, rescue workers can see it well at night! Then she decided to use a*board and*glow-in-the-dark paint. Her idea was to write a house number on the board with it. That is
(B)Lumo Board. Nicolaʼs team made mistakes many times, but they exchanged their ideas and supported each other. Finally they made the idea real when Nicola was seventeen years old.
Nicolaʼs team*won the prize at a contest by*Innovate South Africa (ISA). It is a contest which collects great ideas from high school students to make their towns better. Since then, the ISA and Nicolaʼs friends have helped Nicola to make Lumo Board better. Now she has a dream. She hopes that ever y house in all the poor places in South Africa will have a Lumo Board by 2020.
Each*community has its own problems. I learned that from Nicolaʼs stor y. She found the problem in her town and talked about her idea to the people around her.
Then she got their help for making Lumo Board. So I think itʼs important for us to share our ideas to solve the problems. If we do
(C)that, we will get some answers for a better future.
Nicola says, Young people need to have big dreams. They have the*power to change the world.
