1.
Introduction
The
descriptions
of omens or auspiciousness are appearedin
various texts,and areim-portant
for
understanding theconcept of cosmologyin
ancient India.Though the impor-tance ofthese textsiswell known, only littleresearch hasbeen done, and therefbrethere isroom
for
studying on themanuscripts(MSS)
related tothese texts.The
GargasamhitE
(GSamii)
,i)
when
is
addressed inthispaper,is
accredited toGarga,andits
contents mightbe
earlier than other well-known andpublished
texts, which describeon omens, auspi-ciousness, or thosedocuments
based
on the theory of Garga, such as the Bghatsaiphita(BghSarph),2)
the AtharvavedapariSi$ta(A]VPariS)
3) and the Matsyapurapa (Matsya-Pur).4)The
causes of omens are especially explored
in
the GSamb39,
and other textshavefbllowed
theGarga's
discourse.
Therefbre,this
paper
will conduct a comparative study oftheabove-mentioned will
be
done,
thatcontributes toabetter
understanding of theprocess
ofcompiling thetexts.2.
The

As
indicated
abeve, most of the GSarph are stillinthe state of MSS. The study ofGSarnli41 Yugapurana, theGSafph

is
traditionallyconsidered tobe Garga,theGSaTph lackstheauthenticity of
having

theBIhSarnh atthisstage.Therefbre,thisstudywill
focus
on theGSarph

and theapplicable chapters ofthe other texts. For example, theGSarnh

is
also edited with nine MSS, 6)while Adl)hutas5gara(AdbhutaS,

passages
from
the
MatsyaPur
237.Hence,
thetextsare added as an appendix, and are placedtogetherwith a number ofparallel passagesfrom
theMatsyaPur.
The twelfthitemof the
GSamh
39
is
named as `Cthechapter
(adhyaya)
about omens ofthe King consisting eight omens
in
thekingdom."
The narning method usedhere
is
not standard, as otheritems
deal
with thenaturalphenornenon
as such as "imagesof
god,"
"grain," "fbrest,"
and "rain." Even
though thereare eightclauses inthis
item,
it
is
notcom-posed
as anindividual
chapter. Furtherrnore,thecondition ofthe MSS inthisitem
is
poor as well. These could be the reason why the other related-omen collection textsdid
not adopt thisitem.IntheGSamh manuscript, only theportionof theparallel
passages
ofthe
texthardly
ex-ists
in
the good condition. Inthe manuscript, the netation "-"(like
a hyphen)is
usedwhere the
letters
are missing, andit
shows thatthe condition ofthereferenced manuscriptitself
is
notgood.
Between
theGSaiph
and theMatsyaPur, thereisa conspicuouscoinci-dence
afterGSamh
39.186
and MatsyaPur237.12cd.
And one ofthe remarkablecorrespon-dence
isabout theimposition
ofthetaxby
thegreedyking.
This
kind
ofking's
omens ofGSamh
39.192cd
and MatsyaPur 237.14cd doesnot includein
the utp5ta.This
does
net seem tobe
a coincidental parallel.On theother hand,the continuous
description
of theeleventh and thetwelfthitem
of theGSarph
39
aredescribed
as a single chapterin
theMatsyaPur
237in
its
correspondingpar-allelpassages.We may say thateither thesource ofthe MatsyaPur might
be
themanuscript similar totheone usedin
thispaper,
orit
representsthetheoryofGarga.
Of
course, wedo
nothave
suMcient evidence tospecify thatonly becauseof thepoorcondition ofhis
refer-enced MSS, theeditor ofthe MatsyaPur might havecompiled twoitems
in
the
singlechap-ter.
5.
Conclusion
Itseems thatthetheory of Garga whose composition
is
very similar totheMSS usedin
thisstudy remains
in
thebackground
ofthe MatsyaPur.Ptipa-and apacara- are both importantconcepts, due to theresults of realized omens, and they have
been
reconsidered befbre.i3)Thishasbeen done on thebasis
of the MSS,which adopted the
description
of "raja-apacdra."On
theother side, the
AdbhutaS
and theAdbhutaD i4) also adopt the"nara-apacEra," despite
their method
is
to cite the theory of-(100)
TlieConstructionefthe Gargasarphit5Chapter39(K.

directly.
Consequently,thispaperprepeses
ahypothesis,
asfbllovvs.
The
description
oftheGSamh
MSS
mighthave
fixed
befbre
the other related-omencol-lection
texts.Thegreat
dynasties,
such as the Gupta,haye ruledbefore
these textswere written. iS)Since
theforrn
of a country's government shifts along with itssocial structure,it
is
natural toassume thattheobject ofpacification changed from theking'ssin tonation's16)
one.
Afterconsidering every
factor,
itisdifficultto specify the periodof theGSarph
39.Again,
fbcusing
on theGSamb
39 of the 6Samh MSS usedin
thispaper,it
supports the above-mentioned hypothesis,andit
!eads
us tosay thattheMSS
ofGSaTph mightbe
closertotheoriginal theorythantheother texts.
