Theaimofthisweeklyseminaristoattainacomprehensiveviewofvariouscharacteristicsof 17th-and-18th-centuryJapanese society, whichhashithertooftenbeenregardedmerelyasaperiod oftransitionfromthemedievaltimetothemodern. is to capture the changing phases of the period in various aspects along with methodological

Theproject inauguratedin 1983 has aimed atsheddingfresh lightsofmodern disciplines on various classical records of Buddhist pilgrims and their biographers in order to gain historical informationonCentralAsiaandIndia. A studyofHu山1泊ichao' 、s Acc 印ount 幻s onFi如!~均ve IndicRegi thus culminated in having a Japanese version publishedwit 出h detailed annotations in1円99 引1 , the Faxianzhuanhas become anewtargetofcritical elucidation. The bi-weeklymeetingon Monday afternoonisexpectedtoreachabetterunderstandingofBuddhistIndiainthefifthcenturywiththe outlookofhistory , geography ,language , andreligion.

In this session , weshall examine the legal system ofthe pre-modern China, which is most
importantforunderstandingthesocietyandcultureofthisperiod. Wetakeup,asafirststep,the
TongdianbyDuyouoftheTangdynastyandhavebeenreadingitssectiononcriminallawforgetting
a general outline of the ancient law code history. Further weshall pay attention to the newly discovered materials such as the wooden and bamboo strips in order to supplement our study.

A comparativestudyismadeonthefamilyandthehouseholdinpre-industrialsocietiesofEurope ,
China ,Japanand WesternAsia. Ourstudygroupcontainshistorians ,anthropologists , sociologists andspecialistsinthehistoryofideas. Topicstreatedareasfollows:familyreconstruction ,life-cycle
patterns , population change, patternsofproperty inheritance , lineageformation ofmedieval noble
families ,andpopularattitudestowardsthefamilyandthehouseholdinearlymodernsocieties. We regardrecentanthropologicalandsociologicalstudiesonthefamily, thehouseholdandthe kinship structure as highly stimulative to the field of social history. Historians of a traditional disciplinehaveregardedthefami!) ァand thehouseholdinpre-industrialsocietiesasimmovableand
static, and thereforehavetreatedthem ratherlightly. Since the familyandthehouseholdalways functionedasbasicunitsintheintegrationofanypre-industrialsociety,however ,theydeservetobe studiedmostseriouslybysocialhistorians. Privatedocumentssuchasfamilyarchivesanddiaries ,
which have often been left unutilized by scholars of previous generations , are important source materialsforourstudy.

Thoughitisoftensaidthatthedevelopmentoflogicinthetwentiethcenturyissplendid ,itcan be confined only tothedomainofontic logic. Whileontic logic has beenhighlyelaborated , the other domain oflogic, that is, deontic logichas been lefttotallyundevelopedtothe presentday. Ourseminarthenaimstoadjustthebalanceinthissituationbytrying 1)toestablishdeontic
moralorethicalcodeofordinarylife. Thisjointstudybringstogetherspecialistsinsuchfieldsas
logic,jurisprudenceandethics.

Thisprojectaimstoanalysevariousaspectsofviolence ,symbolicoractual,especiallyinrelation toreligiousbeliefsandrituals. Althoughviolenceisanimportantthemeinsocialscience,thereseem

Around1800,Europeancountriesunderwentprofoundchanges ,notonlyinpoliticsandeconomy
butalsoincultureand socialstructure. Newkindsofknowledge ,especially scientific knowledge ,
hadgreatinfluenceuponreconstructingsocialorders. Thistransformationofsocietyalsoproduced neweliteclasses:technocrats ,universityradicals ,engineers ,andeverykindofexpertinthesciences ,
who participated in the reconstruction of the social order with their scientific knowledge. This researchprojectaimstoclarifytherelationshipbetweenknowledgeandthesocialorderbyinvestigating theformationoftheneweliteclassesin19thcenturyEurope. Specialemphasiswillbelaidonthe reconstructionofnationalhighereducation ,whichplayedacentralpartintheformationoftheelites.

Studiesincommunication ,especiallyinverbalcommunication ,havebeenbasedontheideasthat humantalkislinearlyconstructedaswrittentextis,thateachturninaseriesoftalksisattributed toasinglespeaker ,andthatthetimestructureofverbalcommunicationislinearandeven. The mainobjectiveofourjointstudyistocollectandanalysetypesofcommunicationphenomenawhich
couldnotbefullyunderstoodfromtheviewofverbalcommunicationreferredtoabove,andfurther ,
tomakeatheoryofcommunicationand/orsocialinteractioningeneralwhich would not be based
upon the language-centered idea. Our research group consists of ethnographers , anthropologists ,
sociologists ,ethologists ,andprimatologists. Inthefirstyear,wetriedtocriticallyreviewtheworks
on communication by E.Go 仔man , G. Bateson and others. In the second year, wewill analyse
video-documentsofconversationalinteractionineverydaylife.

dharma-literatureratherasthemirrorofHinduculturaltraditions ,thanasthelegalliteratureinits limitedaspect. WehavetakenuptheYii} らavalkya-smrti ,oneoftheoldestDharma 詰stras ,andhave beenexaminingthecontentsandstructureofthistextthroughthejointcooperationofthescholars whoaretheexpertsofvariousfieldsofIndology. Throughtheanalysisofthedharmaliterature ,we trytoshedthelightontheaspectsoftheformationperiodoftheHinducivilizationwhichhavenot beenfullyinvestigated.
