Theaimofthisweeklyseminaristoattainacomprehensiveviewofvariouscharacteristicsof 17th-and-18th-centuryJapanese society, whichhashithertooftenbeenregardedmerelyasaperiod oftransitionfromthemedievaltimetothemodern. Ourmethodwillbetoundertakeaninterdisciplinary analysis ofthewritings ofKaibara Ekiken , an active thinker ofthe time. This method will be adoptedbecauseoftheunusualbroadnessofKaibara'ssocialconcerns. Theaim ofthis project is to gathercomprehensive information relatingto the activities and

The object ofthis study is the so-called‘bunj in shumi' in China. ‘B unj in shumi' means the tastewhichtheChineseliteratihaveconsideredthebestasaprivatelifestyle. Ourstudyisnotconュ finedtoaperiodbuttotheareaJiang-nan ,theculturalcentreinoldtimes. Themainthemeofthe

studyisZunshengbajianbyGaoLian(Mingdynasty).

During17thcentury ,Chinaexperienceddynamicchangesinitssocialstructure ,economy ,ideology

andculture. TheChingdynastywhichhadtakenovertheMingdynasty ,restructuredthosechanges andestablishedthebaseforthenewruleofthenationfor 260years. Thepurposeofourstudy

is to capture the changing phases of the period in various aspects along with methodological

examinations. Thestudygroupmeetseveryweekfortextreadingandindividualresearchreports. The textsincludebiographiesofrepresentativefiguresofthetimeindi 仔'erent fields.

INDIA AND CENTRAL ASIA ACCORDING T O BUDDHIST PILGRIMS: A STUDY OF

Theproject inauguratedin 1983 has aimed atsheddingfresh lightsofmodern disciplines on various classical records of Buddhist pilgrims and their biographers in order to gain historical informationonCentralAsiaandIndia. A studyofHu山1泊ichao' 、s Acc 印ount 幻s onFi如!~均ve IndicRegi thus culminated in having a Japanese version publishedwit 出h detailed annotations in1円99 引1 , the Faxianzhuanhas become anewtargetofcritical elucidation. The bi-weeklymeetingon Monday afternoonisexpectedtoreachabetterunderstandingofBuddhistIndiainthefifthcenturywiththe outlookofhistory , geography ,language , andreligion.

Theaimofthisweeklyseminaristoclarifythecharacteristicsoftheseveralfieldsofthetraditional technologyinChina,inparticularthefieldsrelatedwiththeusuallifeanddomesticsciences. Our immediate plans are to read and give the Japanese translation oftwodi 仔erent kinds oftexts on agricultureandhorticulture;themaintextforthegeneralinterestsisNengShu(AgriculturalTreatise) writtenbyWangZhenin1332ofYuandynasty ,thesubsidiaryoneforthespecificinterestsisZhejiang

Lu(CollectedBiographiesof 恥Iastercraftsmen) editedby LiangQi-Xiongin 1933. Aswellasthe

philological works,wealsoplanforthememberstogivetheirlecturesonthevarioussubjectson

thehistoryoftechnologyinChina.

Inacontinuedseries, thisseminaralsocoverstheperiodfrom thethirdcenturyB.C.tothe

tenth century A.D. and will examine both transmitted and newly excavated materials , including

inscriptions ,manuscripts ,paintings ,andotherartifacts.

Recentlypublicationsofarchaeologicalreportshavegrowntoomuchtodigest. Wecannotstudy Chinesesocialhistory ,inthebroadersense,withoutmakinguseofthesematerialsappropriately. We seektodigintothecultureofmedievalChinaonthebasisoftheachievementofourpreviousseries ofstudies.

In this session , weshall examine the legal system ofthe pre-modern China, which is most

importantforunderstandingthesocietyandcultureofthisperiod. Wetakeup,asafirststep,the

TongdianbyDuyouoftheTangdynastyandhavebeenreadingitssectiononcriminallawforgetting

a general outline of the ancient law code history. Further weshall pay attention to the newly discovered materials such as the wooden and bamboo strips in order to supplement our study.

A comparativestudyismadeonthefamilyandthehouseholdinpre-industrialsocietiesofEurope ,

China ,Japanand WesternAsia. Ourstudygroupcontainshistorians ,anthropologists , sociologists andspecialistsinthehistoryofideas. Topicstreatedareasfollows:familyreconstruction ,life-cycle

patterns , population change, patternsofproperty inheritance , lineageformation ofmedieval noble

families ,andpopularattitudestowardsthefamilyandthehouseholdinearlymodernsocieties. We regardrecentanthropologicalandsociologicalstudiesonthefamily, thehouseholdandthe kinship structure as highly stimulative to the field of social history. Historians of a traditional disciplinehaveregardedthefami!) ァand thehouseholdinpre-industrialsocietiesasimmovableand

static, and thereforehavetreatedthem ratherlightly. Since the familyandthehouseholdalways functionedasbasicunitsintheintegrationofanypre-industrialsociety,however ,theydeservetobe studiedmostseriouslybysocialhistorians. Privatedocumentssuchasfamilyarchivesanddiaries ,

which have often been left unutilized by scholars of previous generations , are important source materialsforourstudy.

A STUDYOF LEGALTHINKING

Thoughitisoftensaidthatthedevelopmentoflogicinthetwentiethcenturyissplendid ,itcan be confined only tothedomainofontic logic. Whileontic logic has beenhighlyelaborated , the other domain oflogic, that is, deontic logichas been lefttotallyundevelopedtothe presentday. Ourseminarthenaimstoadjustthebalanceinthissituationbytrying 1)toestablishdeontic

moralorethicalcodeofordinarylife. Thisjointstudybringstogetherspecialistsinsuchfieldsas

logic,jurisprudenceandethics.

VIOLENCEINRELIGIOUSCONTEXTS

Thisprojectaimstoanalysevariousaspectsofviolence ,symbolicoractual,especiallyinrelation toreligiousbeliefsandrituals. Althoughviolenceisanimportantthemeinsocialscience,thereseem

tohavebeenfew systematicattemptstounderstandit. Herewedealwithviolencemainlyinthe

followingtwoaspects: first, theoretical argumentson the function andmeaningofviolence in the formationofhumansociety; secondly , cross-culturalstudiesontheideasofviolenceanditsforms andmeaningsinreligiouscontexts.

Around1800,Europeancountriesunderwentprofoundchanges ,notonlyinpoliticsandeconomy

butalsoincultureand socialstructure. Newkindsofknowledge ,especially scientific knowledge ,

hadgreatinfluenceuponreconstructingsocialorders. Thistransformationofsocietyalsoproduced neweliteclasses:technocrats ,universityradicals ,engineers ,andeverykindofexpertinthesciences ,

who participated in the reconstruction of the social order with their scientific knowledge. This researchprojectaimstoclarifytherelationshipbetweenknowledgeandthesocialorderbyinvestigating theformationoftheneweliteclassesin19thcenturyEurope. Specialemphasiswillbelaidonthe reconstructionofnationalhighereducation ,whichplayedacentralpartintheformationoftheelites.

Whatisliterature? Thisquestion ,whichhasbeenposedtimeandagainsinceAristotle ,willbe

approachtoliterature ,beingespeciallyawareofrecentsemioticalandstructuralmethodologies. To apprehendliteraturewhereitinterfaceswithotherdisciplines(lin gu istics,sociology ,psychology ,etc.) willbeourobject.

Studiesincommunication ,especiallyinverbalcommunication ,havebeenbasedontheideasthat humantalkislinearlyconstructedaswrittentextis,thateachturninaseriesoftalksisattributed toasinglespeaker ,andthatthetimestructureofverbalcommunicationislinearandeven. The mainobjectiveofourjointstudyistocollectandanalysetypesofcommunicationphenomenawhich

couldnotbefullyunderstoodfromtheviewofverbalcommunicationreferredtoabove,andfurther ,

tomakeatheoryofcommunicationand/orsocialinteractioningeneralwhich would not be based

upon the language-centered idea. Our research group consists of ethnographers , anthropologists ,

sociologists ,ethologists ,andprimatologists. Inthefirstyear,wetriedtocriticallyreviewtheworks

on communication by E.Go 仔man , G. Bateson and others. In the second year, wewill analyse

video-documentsofconversationalinteractionineverydaylife.

StudiesinHumanitiesseemtohavebeenattheturningpointinrecentyears,due,ontheone

hand, totheincreasingtendencyofspecializationandsegmentationobservedineachfield,and,on the other, tothe serious doubtsputtotheoverall“g ran d theories". ¥Viththissituation inview,

ourprojectaimsatconstuctinganewintellectualparadigm ,lookingforanewmethodologyforthe

studyofHumanities. Inourseminar ,wewilltakeuptheclassicalworksinthefieldsofHumanities

Farbeyondthe scopeoflegalorjurisprudentaspect, ithasexertedgreatinfluenceonthe idiomofnorm-expressioninthebroadspheresofsocialandculturaltraditionthrough theagesof

boththeclassicalandthemodernIndia. TheDharmasutrasandtheDharma 品stras belongtothegenre

ofliteraturewhichtreatof“dharma" initsvarioustopics. Inourseminar ,thefocushasbeenset

ontheformation periodoftheclassical Indiandharmaliteratureandourstandpointistoseethe

dharma-literatureratherasthemirrorofHinduculturaltraditions ,thanasthelegalliteratureinits limitedaspect. WehavetakenuptheYii} らavalkya-smrti ,oneoftheoldestDharma 詰stras ,andhave beenexaminingthecontentsandstructureofthistextthroughthejointcooperationofthescholars whoaretheexpertsofvariousfieldsofIndology. Throughtheanalysisofthedharmaliterature ,we trytoshedthelightontheaspectsoftheformationperiodoftheHinducivilizationwhichhavenot beenfullyinvestigated.
