日本固有の小動物であるヤマネは、人里離れた山々の、森の奥深くにひっ そりと生息しています。そのかわいらしい顔つきと独特の生態は、多くの 日本人の心をひきつけてきました。今、生存の危機におびやかされている 彼らの声なき声に耳を傾けてみましょう。
Have you ever seen this animal before? It is a very rare breed of animal
that lives only in Japan. It is called the
yamane. The yamane spends almost
half of its life sleeping.
It is believed that the yamane came to Japan long before humans did. The
animal can be found in Shikoku and Kyusyu as well as in Honshu. However,
no one knows how it spread to the areas.
The yamane is nocturnal, and it hibernates high in the mountains. Because
of its lifestyle, it is rarely seen by humans. Some people who saw the animal
said, “The
yamane is the spirit of the forest.”
The yamane is facing a serious crisis now. Deforestation by humans has
been increasing, even high in the mountains. As the deforestation continues,
more and more natural forests, the precious habitat of the yamane, are being
lost. As a result, the number of this precious animal has been decreasing
rapidly. We need to think about why the yamane is endangered. If we do
not, we will lose it forever.

It is believed that … で、「that 以下のことが信じられています。」という意味になります。 It は、具体的には that 以下の内容を指していると解釈します。that 以下には、通例、主語と 動詞を伴った文が来ます。People を主語にして、People believe that the yamane came to japan long before humans did. と書きかえることができます。

How did it spread to the area? という疑問文が、動詞の目的語の位置に置かれると、語 順が「主語＋動詞」となり、No one knows how it spread to the areas.という文になります。 この how it spread to the areas の部分を間接疑問と呼びます。

rarely などの副詞
Because of its lifestyle, it is rarely seen by humans.「そのライフスタイルのため、 それは人間に見られることはめったにありません。」
rarely は、「めったに∼ない」という意味を表し、be 動詞の直後か、または一般動詞の直 前におかれるのが通例です。rarely とほぼ同じく「めったに∼しない」という意味を表す副 詞に seldom があります。rarely のほうが seldom より若干口語的、つまり話しことばで使 われる傾向にあります。
1. She rarely drinks coffee. ( = She seldom drinks coffee.)
2. He is rarely at his office in the evening. ( = He is seldom at his office in the evening.) 3. We rarely go to bed before 11 o clock.(= We seldom go to bed before 11 o clock.)
