S: Yokosuka English Information. This show is for conveying upcoming events in Yokosuka, or other information related to daily life, to foreign residents in the area.
T: Hello everyone, this is Tomi.
S: And this is Daniel. Welcome to Yokosuka English Information for the week of September 19th.
T: Welcome.
S: It’s holiday week!
T: Yes, we have 2 national holidays this week, for anyone who doesn’t know already. 敬老の日 and 秋分の日.
S: Yes, so Respect for the Aged Day, and Autumn Equinox Day. T: Right.
S: I like having all these holidays in Japan, it breaks up the week a bit more.
2
S: No, not really. We have a few major ones where everyone usually has off like Thanksgiving or Christmas, but it seems like in Japan they’re more evenly spread out throughout the year.
T: Yeah, in Japan we have national holidays almost every month. But we don’t get as much time off during Christmas and the holiday season, if at all.
S: Yeah that’s true. Up and downs to everything.
T: Yeah, but most listeners should have off on 2 days this week. S: So we should focus today’s show on how to spend their days off. T: Sounds good. It’s good to have plans.
S: Yeah.
T: 今週は敬老の日と秋分の日、2 日祝日がありますね。日本はア
メリカと比べると祝日が多いようです。それでは、今週のイ ベント情報をご紹介します。
馬門山海軍墓地彼岸花まつり
T: So what is going on this week, that listeners can do on their time off? S: Well, on Autumn Equinox Day, which is Thursday the 22nd, there’s
actually a festival going on at the Mamonzan Navy Cemetery. T: Oh right, we talked about this a little bit last week.
S: Yeah, so there will be the Red Lily Spider Festival going on there, for anyone interested in checking out some nature.
3
S: Yeah, so if you’re looking for something to do on your day off, that might be something to keep in mind.
T: So where and when is the festival again?
S: Oh right, the Red Lily Spider Festival will be going on at the Mamonzan Navy Cemetery, which is within walking distance from Keikyu Kitakurihama Station.
T: Okay.
S: And it will open up at 8:00, so I’d recommend getting to the festival early-on in the morning.
T: Got it. And people should bring their cameras too, right?
S: Yes, for people interested, there’ll be a photo contest as well too, so bring your cameras if you want to join, and take some pictures of the red spider lilies.
T: They should be able to get a lot of great pictures. S: Yeah, for sure.
S: Alright - so that’s one thing people can do on their days off.
T: We can also introduce some more events going on. This time at Solei no Oka - Nagai Seaside Park.
4
S: Yes, Nagai Seaside Park - it’s a great time of year to go now too, not too hot, not too cold…
T: And they have lots of animals you can pet too.
S: Yeah, so there’s all kinds of things at Nagai Seaside Park - it’s not the first time we’ve mentioned it here on the show.
T: Yeah, it’s a really big park with a lot of things to do in it. S: And they have events from time to time too.
T: They have events going on now too, right?
S: Yeah - for any anime fans, or people with kids, they actually have a Dragon Ball-centered event going on now too. You might’ve seen posters for it around Yokosuka - it’s been going on throughout the summer, but will finally be coming to a close on Sunday.
T: So people still have some time this week to check it out!
S: Yeah it’ll be their last chance to check it out if they haven’t already. I know they have some Dragon Ball-related things for sale, and there’s also an activity where you look for Dragon Balls inside the park, and get a prize if you find them all.
T: Sounds fun for the family or for anime fans. Are Americans usually familiar with Dragon Ball?
S: Yeah, I think a lot of people are. It was a show that was broadcast on TV in the states too, so a lot of people have seen it in some form. T: Cool - yeah it’s one of the most popular anime series in Japan.
5
S: For sure, they still have new episodes every week too. So let’s see, anything else I’m missing at Nagai Seaside Park for this week? T: Yes, there’s actually an activity for people who are into fitness too. S: What kind of fitness?
T: On Sunday the 25th, people can take part in a free Yoga lesson! S: Oh really? At Nagai Seaside Park?
T: Yes, it’s called Yoga Soleil. Completely free for anyone to join. S: And when’s that taking place?
T: The yoga lesson will start from 11am and go for about an hour. S: That’s cool they have a free yoga lesson for people. Usually that’s
something you have to join a gym for. Is there anything that people will need to bring for the lesson?
T: Just, clothes that are easy to move in, and then a yoga mat, if you have one, or just a regular bath towel is fine too.
S: Sounds good. I’ve never tried to take a regular class or anything like that, but I’ve followed along with a few videos before - it’s pretty fun! Gives you a good stretch too. Have you ever done yoga?
T: Yes, I have. Yoga is really good for refreshing your body and mind. S: Nice. Alright, so any listeners that want to give yoga a shot, here’s
your free lesson at Nagai Seaside Park. T: Anything else to mention?
6
S: There’s actually one last thing to mention that’s going on at Nagai Seaside Park, which I’m sure we’ll be mentioning over the coming weeks too.
T: What’s that?
S: Well, believe or not, we’re soon approaching October, so there’s also a Halloween-themed event that’s going on at Nagai Seaside Park from now up until the end of October.
T: Nice, what will they have?
S: It’s an event where kids or adults can govegetablepicking, try their hand at making some Halloween-themed desserts, and some other fun activities.
T: Sounds like a good way to start celebrating the Halloween season early!
S: Yeah, and like I said, I’m sure we’ll be mentioning it again in more detail in the coming weeks as we get closer to Halloween.
CLOSING T: Well, I think that’s about time for today.
S: Yeah, I think so. To everyone out there, thanks for listening to Yokosuka English Information! As usual, we’ll be airing every weekday, 12 to 12:10pm, with new episodes every Monday.
