7he Old. Mm and the Seaは、 観 光 団 の 中 の 一 人 の 女 性 が 老 人 が 釣 っ
た 獲 物 の 無 残 な 姿 に 目 を 留 め て、 給 仕 に 何 な の か と 尋 ね る と、 給 仕 は "Eshark. '"1)と 読っ た 英 語 で 答 え て、 〈 事 の 次 第 〉 を 説 明 し か け、 そ
れ を 聞 い た 彼 女 は、"Ididn't know sharks had such handsome, beauti-fully formed tails. '"(127)と 言 う、 そ して、 そ の 間、 老 人 は そ ん な や
り取 り な ど は 知 ら ず に、 少 年 に 見 守 ら れ な が ら、 ラ イ オ ン の 夢 を 見 て い る、 と い う場 面 で 終 わ っ て い る。 給 仕 と観 光 客 と の 間 に 一 っ の 事 実 を 共 有 す る こ と か ら生 ま れ る会 話、 さ ら に言 う と、 一 っ の 〈 物 語 〉 を 想 像 して い く会 話 が 生 ま れ て い る。 こ の 最 後 の 場 面 は何 を 〈 物 語 〉 っ て い る の で あ ろ うか。 海 へ 乗 り 出 す 前 の 老 人 と少 年 と の や り取 り の 中 で こ ん な 場 面 が あ る。 少
年 が"What do you have to eat?'"(16)と 尋 ね る と、 老 人 は"A pot of yellow rice with fish. Do you want some?'"(16)と 答 え、 少 年 が
"May I take the cast net?'"と 聞 く と、 老 人 は"Of course. '"(16)
と 返 事 を す る。 と こ ろ が、 次 に"There was no cast net and the boy
re-membered when they had sold it. But they went through this fiction
every day. There was no pot of yellow rice and fish and the boy knew
this too. "(16)と 続 く。 ま た、 老 人 が"Yes. I have yesterday's paper and l will read the baseball. '"(17)と 言 う と、 次 に"The boy did not
know whether yesterday's paper was afiction too. "(17)と 少 年 の 困
惑 が 書 か れ る。 ま た、 老 人 が"Ionly needed time to wash. '"(21)と
言 う と、 次 に"Where did you wash? The Village water supply was two streets down the road. "(21)と い う よ う に 少 年 の 自 問 が 続 く。
老 人 と 少 年 と の 間 で 〈 対 話 劇 〉 が 行 な わ れ る。 少 年 は 老 人 の 言 葉 を 〈 台 詞 〉 だ と 受 け 取 っ て、 彼 の 相 手 役 に な る。 少 年 は 昨 日 の 新 聞 云 々 も手 を 洗 う 云 々 も、 い ず れ は、 〈 対 話 劇 〉 の 中 に 入 る こ と に な る か も し れ な い こ と を 感 じ取 っ て い る。 し か し、 一 見、 非 現 実 的 な 〈 対 話 劇 〉 は 彼 ら の 現 実 感 を 希 薄 に は し な い。 そ れ ど こ ろ か、 彼 らの 現 実 感 に 一 つ の ア ク セ ン トを っ け て、 彼 らの コ ミ ュ ニ ケ ー シ ョ ン を 深 め て い く。 そ れ だ か ら こ そ、 少 年 は、 最 初、 そ れ が 〈 台 詞 〉 で あ る か ど う か に戸 惑 う け れ ど も、 〈 台 詞 〉 だ と分 か れ ば、 自分 た ち の 対 話 の 中 に 組 み 込 ん で、 対 話 そ れ 自 体 の 現 実 感 を 高 め て い く。 少 年 は、 戸 惑 い 自 問 し な が ら、 〈 対 話 劇 〉 を は さ む こ と に よ っ て 現 実 感 が 高 め ら れ て い く対 話 の 中 に 身 を 置 い て、 老 人 の 存 在 感 に 対 す る手 応 え を 確 か に し て い く。"Apot of yellow rice withfish"も"the cast
net"も、 今、 目 の 前 に は な い け れ ど も、 老 人 の 体 験 の 中 に 厳 然 と 存 在 し
て い て、 対 話 を 通 し て 現 前 化 す る。 少 年 は そ の こ と を 知 って い る。 そ し て、
老 人 の 肉 体 が 彼 に そ の こ と を 感 じ取 ら せ て い る。 老 人 の 目 一"they were
the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated. "(10)一 や 肩 や 首 や し わ 一"They were strange shoulders, still powerful although
very old, and the neck was still strong too and the creases did not
show so much when the old man was asleep and his head fallen f

な どが少 年 の 知 って い る こ とを確 か に して くれ る。 少 年 は
〈 対 話 劇 〉 はた だ の 架 空 の代 物 で は な く、 過去 の体 験 の裏 付 け が あ る もの
で あ る こ とを知 って い る。
そ して、 この 肉体 の存 在 の手 応 え に っ い て さ らに言 う と、 少 年 は老 人 と
の 共 通 体 験 一 少 年 に と って は原 体 験一 に よ って この手 応 え が伝 え る メ
ッセ-ジが 間 違 い の な い もの で あ る こ と を確 信 して い る。少 年 は五 才 の と きに老

密 教 文 化 人 に 初 め て 魚 釣 り に 連 れ て い か れ た が、 そ の と き に 釣 っ た 魚 が 暴 れ て、 も う少 し の と こ ろ で 舟 が 大 破 して し ま う と い っ た 事 件 に 遭 遇 す る。 少 年 が そ の と き の 模 様 を 語 る と、 老 人 は"Can you really remember that or did
Ijust tell it to you?'"(13)と 尋 ね る。 そ し て、 少 年 が"I remember
everything from when wefirst went together. '"(13)と 答 え る と、 老
人 は"his sun-burned, confident loving eyes"(13)で 少 年 を 見 る。 少 年
は そ の 老 人 の 目 に よ っ て 自分 の 体 験 の 手 応 え を 再 確 認 して い る。 そ し て、 こ の 再 確 認 が 老 人 の 存 在 の 確 か さ を 支 え る役 割 を 果 た し て い る。"Ire-member'"云 々 と 老 人 に 向 か っ て 言 う少 年 は 手 応 え の あ る 漁 師 と し て の 老 人 の 存 在 を 現 前 化 す る 状 況 を 作 っ て い る。 少 年 は こ の こ と を 知 っ て い る か ら こ そ、 老 人 と の 〈 対 話 劇 〉 を た だ の 架 空 の 代 物 と して 片 づ け な い。 少 年 を 相 手 役 に す る 〈 対 話 劇 〉 は 老 人 が 漁 師 と して 積 み 上 げ て き た 日 々 の 体 験 の 上 で 成 立 し て い る。 し た が っ て、 〈 対 話 劇 〉 を す る と い う行 為 が 無 数 の 漁 を や り こ な し て き た 老 人 の 過 去 を 現 前 化 さ せ、 現 在 の 老 人 の 存 在 を 未 来 に 向 か っ て の 手 応 え の あ る も の に す る 役
割 を 果 た し て い る。"Apot of yellow rice withfish"も"the cast net"
も 現 に な い け れ ど も、 〈 対 話 劇 〉 は そ れ らが 現 に 彼 の 体 験 した 日 々 の 生 活 の 一 部 で あ っ た こ と を 彼 に 感 じ取 らせ、 そ して、 そ れ ら を 通 して 現 在 の 彼
を 現 に 存 在 す る も の と して 彼 に 再 認 識 さ せ て い る。 〈 対 話 劇 〉 を 取 り込 ん
だ、 少 年 と の 対 話 は、 日 々 老 い て い く老 人 に と っ て、 現 に 漁 師 と して 存 在
す る 自 分 が あ る の だ と い う こ と を 確 認 す る 行 為 な の だ と 言 え る。
そ して、 少 年 を 相 手 に し て 対 話 を し て い る と き は"the great DiMaggio" (103)は 老 人 の 生 き る 姿 勢 に 積 極 的 な 支 え の 役 割 を 果 た す。 例 え ば、 少 年 が"But l fear the lndians of Cleveland. '"と 気 の 弱 そ う な こ と を 言 う
と、 老 人 は"Have faith in the Yankees my son. Think of the great
DiMaggio. '"(17)と 言 っ て 少 年 の 不 安 を 笑 う。 ま た、 少 年 が"They(=
The Yankees)lost today. '"(21)と 言 う と、 老 人 は"That means
の 冒 頭 で84日 間 も 不 漁 だ っ た 舟 の 帆 は"the flag of permanent defeat"
(9)の よ う だ っ た と書 か れ て い る け れ ど も、 少 年 と の 対 話 の 場 で は、 老
人 は"the flag of permanent defeat"を 象 徴 と す る よ う な 自分 の 人 生 を 意
識 して い る の で は な く、 常 に 本 来 の 自 分 自 身 を 取 り 戻 すDiMaggioを 原
型 に し た 自 分 の 人 生 を 意 識 し て い る。
そ して、 少 年 は そ の よ う に 自 分 を 仕 立 て て い る 自 分 自 身 を 老 人 に 意 識 さ せ る 役 割 を 引 き受 け て い る。 彼 は 老 人 に"There are many
goodfisher-men and some great ones. But there is only you. '"(23)と 言 う。 こ の "But there is only you. '"と い う少 年 の 言 葉 は、 少 年 がDiMaggioの 他
に も い い 選 手 が い る よ と 言 っ た と き の、"But he makes the difference. '"
(21)と い う老 人 の く 台 詞 〉 と 呼 応 し て い る。 老 人 が 新 聞 を 手 に 取 る と、
少 年 は 野 球 の こ と が 知 り た く て、 老 人 に"When I come back you can tell me about the baseball. '"と か"You study it and tell me when I
come back. '"(17)と か と 言 う。 こ こ に は 漁 師 と し て の 老 人 の 成 果 に 期 待 し て い る 少 年 の 心 情 が 隠 さ れ て い る。 す な わ ち、 少 年 は 老 人 か ら野 球 の 話 を 聞 き た い と 思 っ て い る の と 同 じ よ う に 不 漁 続 き の 老 人 か ら素 晴 ら し い 漁 の 物 語 を 聞 き た い と 思 っ て い る。 さ ら に 言 う と、 少 年 は そ の 物 語 の 中 に DiMaggioの 姿 を 連 想 さ せ る よ う な 老 人 の 姿 を 見 た い と 思 っ て い る の で あ る。
老 人 が"When I was your age I was before the mast on a square rigged ship that ran to Africa and I have seen lions on the beaches in the evening. '"(22)と 語 る と、 少 年 は"I know. You told me. '"(22)
と言 う。 そ こ で、 老 人 が"Should we talk about Africa or about
base-ball?'"(22)と 聞 く と、 少 年 は"Baseball I think. '"(22)と 答 え る。
少 年 は 老 人 の 意 識 をDiMaggioの 生 き ざ ま を 原 型 に し た 自 分 の 人 生 の 姿 に 向 か わ せ る 役 割 を 果 た して い る。 少 年 は 野 球 の 話 を 持 ち 出 す こ と に よ っ て 老 人 に 自分 自 身 の ア イ デ ン テ ィ テ ィ の 存 在 の 確 か さ を 分 か ら せ て い る の で あ る。

出 か け な け れ ば な ら な い 彼 は"Imay not be as strong as I think. But Iknow many tricks and I have resolution. '"(23)と 少 年 に 言 う。 少 年
は 老 人 か ら こ の 言 葉 を 引 き 出 し て か ら、 老 人 に"You ought to go to bed now so that you will be fresh in the morning. '"(23)と や さ し く 言 う。 そ し て、 老 人 は 「技 術 」 と 「意 志 」 を も っ てDiMaggioに 根 差 し
た 漁 師 と し て の ア イ デ ン テ ィ テ ィ を 実 現 す べ く 漁 に 出 掛 け る。

あ る よ う に、 老 人 は海 に 出 る と、
無 意 識 の うち に大 きな声 で し ゃべ り出 す。 老 人 と少 年 が い っ し ょに海 に 出
た場 合、 普 通、 二 人 は必 要 な と き しか し ゃべ らな い けれ ど も、老 人 は一 人
で 海 に出 る と、 大 き な声 で独 り言 を言 う理 由 は, 自分 の 考 え を大 き な声 で
言 って も誰 も迷 惑 を 被 ら な いか ら で あ る(39)。
少 年 は こ の、 海 の上 で
〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 を して い る老 人 の姿 を知 らな い。 す な わ ち、 少 年 は海 の上 で
か くあ るべ き 自分 の姿 とか くあ る 自 分 の 姿 と の差 に苦 しむ 老 人 が 演 じる
意 識 の 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 を知 らな い。 誰 に も迷 惑 を か け た くな い か ら、 と い う
こ とで あ るが、 こ の こ と は老 人 は少 年 に は知 られ た く な い 自 分 自 身 の 姿
-"If the others heard me talking out loud they would think that Iam crazy. '"(39)一 を 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 で さ ら け 出 す と い う こ と を 意 味 し て い る。 彼 は軍 艦 鳥 の 姿 を 見 っ け た と き、"He's got something. He's not
just looking. '"(33)と 大 声 で 言 う。 こ れ が 彼 が 海 上 に 出 て 最 初 に 口 に 出 し た 言 葉 で あ る が、 こ れ らの 言 葉 は 少 年 が い た な ら ば 発 せ ら れ な か っ た で
あ ろ う。"He had probably started to talk aloud, when alone, when the
手 の 役 を 引 き 受 け て い る。 今、 彼 は 海 上 に 出 て、 一 人 に な っ た と き、 聞 き
手 と して の も う一 人 の 自 分 を 呼 び 出 し て、 そ の 彼 に 現 に 自 分 が 見 て い る も の を 語 る と と も に、 そ れ と 同 時 に 進 行 し て い る 意 識 の 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 も語 る の で あ る。
そ し て、 こ の 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 の 中 心 にDiMaggioの 姿 が あ る。 漁 師 の 中 に は 海 を"acontestant or a place or even an enemy"(30)と し て 語 る
者 が い る 一 方 で、 老 人 は い っ も 海 を"feminine"や"something that gave or withheld great favours"(30)と して 語 る。 こ の 海 と の 関 係
はDiMag-gioと 老 人 と の 関 係 と相 似 形 を な して い る。 彼 に と っ てDiMaggioの 世 界 は 彼 の 現 実 の 世 界 と距 離 を 置 い て 対 峙 し て い る も の で は な く、 彼 の 世 界 に
密 接 しな が ら、 彼 の 眼 差 し を 変 え る も の と し て あ る。 す な わ
ち、DiMag-gioの 世 界 は 老 人 に 自 分 の あ る べ き 姿 と あ り の ま ま の 姿 の 両 方 を 見 せ る 鏡 の 役 割 を 果 た して い る。 老 人 は こ の 二 重 機 能 の 鏡 を 見 な が ら、 小 舟 を 進 め
て い く。"She(=The ocean)is kind and Very beautiful. But she can be
so cruel. "(29)と あ る が、 彼 はDiMaggioの 輝 か し い 姿 を 見 て は 自 分 自
身 を 鼓 舞 し、 ま た、 彼 の 厳 し い 姿 を 見 て は 自 分 自 身 の 現 実 の 有 り 様 を 思 い 知 ら さ れ る。 し か し な が ら、 海 っ ば め 一"Why did they make birds so
delicate and fine as those sea swallows when the ocean can be so cruel?"
(29)-と 違 っ て、 老 人 の 肉 体 一"They were strange shoulders, still pow-erful although very old. て 海 っ ば め で は な い こ と を 確 信 し な が ら も、 肉 体 の 衰 え を 意 識 せ ざ る を え な い。DiMaggioの 鏡 は こ の 老 人 の 肉 体 を 映 す 鏡 で も あ る。
小 舟 の 中 で"And the rich have radios to talk to them in their boats
and to bring them the baseball. '"(39)と 大 声 で 言 っ た 後 で、 彼 は"Now is no time to think of baseball. Now is the time to think of only one
thing. That which l was born for. "(40)と 考 え る。 彼 は、 今、 自 分 が や っ て い る 天 職 と して の 漁 師 の 仕 事 だ け を 考 え て い れ ば い い の だ と 自 分 に 言 い 聞 か せ て い る。 しか し な が ら、 今 の 彼 を 奥 の と こ ろ で 突 き動 か して い る の はDiMaggioで あ る。 老 人 はDiMaggioの 名 に、 い わ ば、 女 性 冠 詞 の laを っ け て、 彼 の 姿 を 心 の 奥 に 根 づ か せ て い る。 そ し て、 彼 は ラ ジ オ か ら の 野 球 放 送 が 流 れ て い な い 巨 大 な 空 間 の 中 で 漁 師 の 仕 事 を 介 し て DiMaggioと し て の 自 分 自 身 を 現 実 の も の と し よ う と して い る。 そ し て、 こ の、DiMaggioを 鏡 と す る 自 分 が 自 分 で あ る た め の 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 に お い て 彼 の 肉 体 が 重 要 な 働 き を す る こ と に な る。 彼 の 肉 体 は 彼 の 漁 師 と し て の 自 己 を 確 認 す る 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 が 意 義 あ る も の と し て あ る の か、 あ る い は、 あ っ た の か を 彼 に 分 か らせ る 重 要 な 役 割 を 果 た し て い る。 彼 の 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 が 成 功 す る の も しな い の も、 い わ ば、 〈 演 者 〉 と し て の 彼 の 肉 体 の 力 に か か っ て く る。 彼 の 意 識 は く 脚 本 〉 を 作 り、 肉 体 が そ れ を 〈 演 じ る 〉。 しか し な が ら、 こ こ で 注 意 す べ き点 は、 彼 の 意 識 は こ れ ま で の 海 で の 体 験 に 基 づ い て 海 を"feminine"(30)と 捉 え て い る け れ ど も、 彼 の 肉 体 は 現 在 の 瞬 間 に の み 関 係 し て い る、 す な わ ち、 た だ 今 あ る も の で し か な い 肉 体 が 現 に 目 の 前 に あ る海 の 現 実 に 接 触 し て い る と い う こ と で あ る。
そ の 彼 の 肉 体 の 実 感 か らす れ ば、 海 は"a contestant or a place or even
an enemy"(30)で しか な い。 彼 の 肉 体 の 目 で 捉 え る海 は 〈 物 語 化 〉 を 拒
な い。 彼 の 肉 体 に と っ て 海 は確 固 た る非 情 な 存 在 で あ る。 冒 頭 の と こ ろ で
彼 の 顔 や 手 の こ と に 触 れ て、"The blotches ran well down the sides of
his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handling heavy
fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert. "(10)と 描 か れ て い る が、 こ れ ら の 顔 や
手 の 傷 跡 は 非 情 な 海 の 刻 印 で あ る。
しか し、 こ こ で 重 要 な 点 は、 非 情 な 海 に 刻 印 を っ け ら れ な が ら も、 老 人 の 肉 体 が 現 に 確 固 た る も の と して 存 在 し て い る こ と で あ る。 老 人 は こ の
肉 体 の ま ぎ れ も な い 確 か さ を 実 感 し て い る。 彼 は 切 り刻 ま れ た 後 も 何 時
間 か 動 く心 臓 の 故 に た い て い の 人 た ち に 嫌 わ れ る 海 亀 の こ と に 触 れ て、 "Ihave such a heart too and my feet and hands are like theirs. "(37)
と考 え る。 彼 は9月 と10月 の 大 物 に そ な え て 体 を 強 く して お く た め に5月
中 亀 の 白 い 卵 を 食 べ て い る。 ま た、 た い て い の 漁 師 た ち が 味 を 嫌 っ て 飲 も
う と し な い サ メ の 肝 油 を 風 邪 の 予 防 や 目 の た め に 毎 日飲 ん で い る(37)。 老
人 は 自 分 の 肉 体 が ま だ 現 役 で あ る こ と を 確 信 し て い る の で あ る。 そ し て、
少 年 は こ の 老 人 の 肉 体 の 力 の 確 か さ 一"They were strange shoulders,

そ して、 こ の 肉 体 の 力 と と も に 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 の 実 現 へ の 期 待 を 支 え て い る の が 漁 師 と して の 技 量 に 対 す る 自信 で あ る。 誰 よ り も ま っ す ぐ に 釣 綱 を
垂 ら す こ と が で き る 老 人 は"lkeep them with precision. Only l haVe no
luck any more. But who knows? Mabye today. Every day is a new
day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when
luck comes you are ready. "(32)と 考 え る。84日 間 も 魚 が 獲 れ な く て も、 老 人 は"Every day is a new day. "と 考 え る が、 漁 師 と し て の 技 量 に

対 す る 自 信 が 彼 に そ う言 わ せ て い る。 例 え ば、"The old man held the line
delicately, and softly, with his left hand, unleashed it from the stick.
Now he could let it run through his fingers without the fish feeling any tension. "(41)と い う 描 写 の 中 の、"delicately, and softly"あ る い は "without thefish feeling any tension"と いっ た と こ ろ に 彼 の 自信 に 満 ち
た 姿 が 見 て 取 れ る。 彼 は 肉 体 の 力 と 漁 師 と して の 技 量 に 対 す る 自 信 を こ の
釣 綱 の 手 応 え で 感 じ取 っ て い る。 老 人 は"This far out, he must be huge
in this month. "(41)と 心 の 中 で 考 え る が、"Only I have no luck any more. "(32)と 考 え て い た 自 分 が 正 しか っ た こ と を 老 人 は こ の 釣 綱 の
手 応 え で 感 じ取 っ て い る わ け で あ る。 そ し て、 こ の 釣 綱 の 手 応 え が 彼 に "Eat them, fish. Eat them. Please eat them. "(41)と 心 の 中 で 言 わ せ
る。
そ し て、 こ の 釣 綱 の 手 応 え が 消 え た 一"Then there was nothing. "(42)一 と こ ろ で、"Come on. '"(42)と い う大 声 と と も に 老 人 の 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 が 大 海 原 の 上 で 始 ま る。 彼 は 声 を 張 り 上 げ て さ ら に"Make another turn

魚 は、 ま だ 漁 師 と して や っ て い け る こ と を 彼 に 確 認 させ て く れ る使 命 を も っ
た 大 魚 で な け れ ば な ら な い の で あ る。
大 魚 の 手 応 え を 感 じて い る 今、 老 人 は 希 望 通 り の 〈 一 人 芝 居 〉 が 期 待 で
き る も の と思 っ て い る。"Then he felt the great touch on the line and
と 自分 が 漁 師 を して い る と い う 意 識 が 重 な っ て い る 喜 び に 浸 っ て い る。 彼

て い る と い う意 識 を 高 め る と 同 時 に そ の 感 触 の 快 楽 を 増 して い く。 しか し、
