diagnosis

is a complex and many

leveled

proeess. At

a fundamental level it ean be seen as a pattern matching problem

where one is trytng to mateh symptoms w!th

disorders.

rmprecision and uncertainty pervade thls matchlng

proeess. Among

the most notable sources are vague and unspecific definitions

of

diseases and associated symptoms.

In

many eases only

a

statistical correlation extsts between symptoms and

dtsorders.

a

further compounding factor is that

decislons

and actions must

be

taken in the face of

tncomplete

informatton.

Thts

sometimes

requtres the use of default rules, such as the easiest first

rule.

Another

level

of the process tnvolves a

dialogue

between

a

patient and a doctor.

This

coinmunlcation

tnterfa

¢e between the

doctor and the

patient

is

an essenttal

component ef the

information

gathering process. As

tn

any other tnterpersenal

relatlenshtp tt is pervaded by various

ktnds

of uncertainty and

Iack of

frankness.

Information

provided

by

patients is usually

of an ±mpressionlsttc nature.

.Pattents

In this talk we sha)l discuss a number of techntques, based
