Makino Gardens Exhibit at BRIT (Botanic Research Institute of Texas)
This exhibit at BRIT was a key event for them this year, and because it was an exchange program with a Japanese garden, our Society helped to liven its opening on Sept. 6 & 7, with Taiko drummers, kimono fashion show, origami, calligraphy, tea ceremony, koto, dancing and demonstrations of other Japanese cultural traditions.

Luncheon – Sunday Sept. 22
Michael Moore, our resident Haiku artist, gave us all background information on this Japanese form or poetry. After this initial exposure, we all wrote our own haiku. Most all of us had the opportunity to read our work of art to the others – and that was one of the best parts. Chef Julia Dunaway prepared a delicious luncheon of chicken rice curry, misoshiru and as a special treat, her carrot cake.

The Komatsu were present to see the recipient of the Toy Komatsu Scholarship. In front are Karl and Nancy Komatsu, Midori Green, Al Komatsu. Facing them are Sylvia Komatsu and Elaine Yamagata talk about her experiences during her trip. We were all impressed by Kalkidan’s eloquence. She was a excellent representative as the first student to receive the Toy Komatsu scholarship to attend this program. Jaime Morris and Lorraine Bretthauer, adult leaders on the trip also spoke, as did Tom Brent, the chair of the Sister Cities Nagaoka committee. Everyone enjoyed the obento lunch prepared by Chef Julia Dunaway. The Events Committee arrived early to help assemble the obentos and prepare the room for the luncheon. Thanks to all who helped make this a great event for the 60 plus members who attended.
