Instructor. Keiko Yamazato

Institution: Okinawa Christian Junior College

Purpose: to help students be good participants in oral communication

Method: to synthesize language skills especially, reading, writing, and speaking Textbooks: The core textbook "Great People of Our time/' published by Kinseida

Eachchapteris a story about a famous person with good number of pages. The textbook is used for each regularclass.

Additional material:"John Lennon My Brother"published by Gemco Press.

It is more difficult and each chapter has more pages. This textbook is read during the winter vacation.

Students'Work: 1. Homework

1) to read the assined material

Because this is a class of English Reading, students haveto read as their

primary duty. The core textbook is easy enough for them to read by themselves. So they are asked to read each chapter (story) as their

homework.

2) to write his/her personal impressions ofwhat he/she has read,

They are also asked to write their personal impressions which they have got from the material. They can write any reaction to the material as their

personal impression which isdifferent from asummary ofthe story. The

reaction or personal impression helps them discuss with the otherstudentsin

their group. Theyhave to submit their writing.

2. Class-work

1) to be in one group of six groups

2) to discuss what they have read, referring towhat they have written

How to Conduct Each Class

1. Groups: Among students there are students who studied abroad more than

two years and have better ability in speaking and ordinary students.

There are a few students from South America. They are also studying

English as a foreign language as well as Japanese students. Fortius

1) onegroup with 4 ordinary Japanese studentsand 1 from South America

In this group the instructorworks as a facilitator of discussion.

2) one group with 1 returnee and the instructor

The instructor encourages the student tospeak as much as possible.

2. Given time to Each Group: 10~16minutes

Within the given time they have to discuss what they have read, referring to

their personal impressions. Each student must talk.

Evaluation.

1. Written Personal Impressions

Each student is evaluated based on their writing, that is personal impressions of

what they have read.

2. Class activities: They are expected to talk as much as possible.

Result: The two groups on the video show that even junior college students can

discuss that much when stimulated by reading material and writing

personal impressions ofwhat they have read. The work ofreading

and writingsurely helps students in their oralcommunication.

As for the returnees, heseems tobe satisfied with his work.
