    Malagasy. Malagasy is the Austronesian language spoken in the Malagasy Republic which occupies the island of Madagascar. 工t has approximately eighteen

dialects, among which Merina has been adopted as the official language oヌr the Republic. Presented in this paper are two dialects: Tandroy in the south and Betsileo on the high central plateaux. Except for the latter part of the data, sentences were not gathered for Betsileo.

   Questioimaire. In collecting the basic vocabulary, phrases, and sentences, l have used Questionnaire for Phill ine Basic Vocabular 工(1962) by Shigeru

   l?roject. This forms a part of the project for the comparative study of the basic vocabulary and sentences. The data for the project have been gathered mainly in the Philippine speech communities by\Tsuchida and myselで' using the (l゛estiorm万゜i゛mentioned above . We have c°llected the linguistをc data foでap!)゛゜− ximately fifty Philippine languages and dialects, twenty-one of them having been published or in the manuscript form.

     Phonologyand orthography. The language informants have observed the writing conventions of the Malagasy language (Merina dialect) in transcribing their respective dialects. 工shall follow their transcription with some pho-nologioal observations made in the following.

   The nasals in the prenasalized voiceless stops are mostly pronoiinced in the speech of moderate speed, ajid completely absent in other cases. There is one i叩111叩9lein Tandroy in which prenasalization occuごrヽ■sbefore a continuant, i.e.

Especially in Betsileo, 1 and r (a trill in naヤ;ure) ar:e fiヽioativ:・:Sbeforヽ:ぷIhigh∇front vowels an砂石゛:when the rollowing vowel is devoiced.

   The vowel length is not distinctive. The letter Z is employed word-finally and i inヶ゜や叩叩sキリデo叩にThタly areご紅1°gll゛万゛皿sof the トgrapheme. It is ge臨二 rally the case that in both the dialects the vowel of The last syllable of a word is devoioed or lost and the consonant before that vowel is often devoiced / tn . . ●    ● ミ ゝ  −j  −
