解 題 本 邦の 英 語 教 育 は 当初,原 書(舶 載 本)に 拠 った ことは前 回 示 した通 りで,明 治 初 期に は夥 しい原 書 の 教 科 書が 流布 した わ け で,そ の 後 明治10年 代 末 か ら英 学の 普及 に つ れ 需 要 の 増 大 と共 に原 書の 翻 刻 が行 われ て きて20年 代,30年 代 に は 一層 盛 に な って き た 。 就 中BarnesのNational Reader,Longman,Sanders,Swinton,Wilson 等 の読 本 は 一 店 に 限 らず い くつか の書 店 か ら競争 の よ うに上 梓 され てい るの はそ れ 丈 需 要 が あ っ た た め で あ ろ う。 交 法 の 場 合 もBrown,Pineo,Swintonは 異 版 が 数 種 あ り,中 で も'Swinton'が 最 も よ く行 われ た のは20年 代 初期 の数 年 間 小 学校(高 等 科)に 週3時 間 英 語 科 が 正 科 に 組 入れ られ,読 本 の'National'や 交 部省 版 と並 行 し て この 初 級 文 典 が 全 国 的 に採 用 され た ため で あ ろ。交 学の 場 合,後 年 の英 文 学 史 的観 11
点か らす る と一 種奇 異 な 感 が あ る であ ろ うが,こ れ が明 治 の 英 学 の 指 向 を 示す も の と して これ ら教 科 書 に採 り上 げ られ た英 学の 明 治 の書 生 に与 え た影 響 を考 えて 欲 しい。 勿論 当時 の 用 書が この 翻 刻版 に限 られ た わ け で な く,東 大,早 大 そ の 英 語 を専 攻 とす る学 生 や 理 科 系 の学 部 の あ る と ころで は必 要 に応 じて原 書 を教 科 書 に した もの で,原 書 に よ らず 完全 に 覆 刻 版 の み で授 業 が で きる よ うに な るの は 戦 後(第 二 次大 戦)の こ ととい え よ う(そ れ も特 種 な 部科 学 生 は不 相 変 な原 書 で あ るが)。 明 治 を代 表 す る最 大 の 流 布本 は 何 とい って もParleyの 万 国 史 で これ は 当時 の英 学 書 生 の 語 学 力の 一つ の 標 準書 とな って い た。 当時 の 人 の 伝 記 を見 る とパ ー レイ を読 ん だ記 事 に 遭 遇 す る。 歴 史 と して 面向 いが 何 分 子 供 用 の もの なの で,そ の 点'Swinton' や'Wilson'の 方 が 程 度 が 高か ったわ け だ が,何 れ も現 代 の 標 準 か らす る と問題 に な ら ない もの の,丁 度 地 理 のComellが 果 した と同 じよ うな啓 蒙 的 役割 を 明治 の書 生 に 演 じて い たわ けで あ る。Riessの 英 語 版 史 書 は 果 して欧 刊 原 書 が あ る もの の翻 刻 か ど うか 疑 わ しい が,内 容 は東 京 大 学 で の講 義 で あ る。 東大,一 橋 高 商,一 高,学 習 院 そ の他 の教 師 が 日本 で編 者 と して 出版 した本 は 次 回本 邦刊 之 部で 紹 介 す る予 定 で あ る。 興 味 あ る ことは 流布 の高 い 教 科書 に は必 ず 解 説 書(虎 の巻)も 沢 山 出 版 され て い るの で,こ れ ら を併 せ て掲 載 で き る と一層 と興 味 が あ るが,ま だ整 理 が 届 か な い の で割 愛, 他 日を期 して い る。 原 書 版 教 科書 と較 べ て 翻 刻 版 が 半数 に も達 しな い(169:80)の は蒐 集が不 充 分 だ っ た だ け でな くそ れ丈 集 中的 に な った こ と他 方 原 書 も併用 され て い たい め で 当時 有 名 な 本 だ ったWayland,Bancroft,Hnmeな ど翻 刻 され な い の は余 り特 種 で 需 要 が少 な か った ため で あ る。 教 科書 と して は何 とい って もア メ リカ系 が 圧 倒 的 で 英 国 系 は 例 外 的 であ る。 そ わ は原書 行時 代 に 福 沢が 作 った 型 の延 長 で,又 日本 の 教 育 制 度 が Morley以 来 ア メ リカに 負 ら と ころが 多か った た めで もあ る。 翻 刻本 のあ る こ とは そ の 背 後 に 必 ず原 書 が あ る ことを物 語 って い る(逆 は真 な らず)。 そ して い つ の時 代 に も 流 行 とい う もの があ った こ とは,異 版 の数 が そ れ を 具 体的 に示 して い る。 あ る意味 で 幼 稚 な 当時 の覆 刻 版 教 科書 が 明治 の先 輩 の 血 とな り肉 とな った こと を思 うと感 慨 に た えな い。 交 献 池 田哲 郎:「 明 治 の 英 語 教科 書 」 英 語 教 育, Vol.XV.
