Cycle 5

• The Observatory intends to meet steady state goals of a minimum of 56 antennas (daytime) and >4200 hours of baseline array time delivered to PIs. Efforts to arrive at Steady State Operations efficiency goals will build on the previous year, i.e., system stability, subarrays and faster return to service following weather events.

• 5 days per week on average should be used for 24 hour PI science.

JAO pipeline got stuck

• Original idea: JAO do all pipeline, and ARCs manual reduction for non-standard + alpha

• Current plan: all of JAO + three ARCs do calibration+ imaging pipeline

• ALMA-J computing prepares 8 more pipeline machines in addition to current 6 pipeline machines

• Typically ~3 days per SB including calibration and imaging. Most of them needed a second pipeline run after flagging.

• Each of JAO, ARC is requested to add ~ 2 FTE more (EA accepted

Cycle 5

• Large Proposals may request more than 50 hours of 12m or more than 1 5 0 (5 0 ) hours of ACA st a nd-a lone , for e a ch progra m. Tot a lly, up to 6 0 0 (4 5 0 ) hours of 1 2 m a nd 4 5 0 (2 7 0 ) hours of ACA st a nd-a lone time will be allocated to Large. Only standard modes (see below) are permitted for Large.

• ALMA e nc oura ge s the community to submit Regular

Proposals that request be t w e e n 1 0 a nd 5 0 hours of 12m Array time.

(13)

Cycle 5 VLBI

V LBI: In addition to submitting an ALMA proposal, 3 m m VLBI programs must also submit a proposal to the GM VA V LBI by 1 Fe brua r y 2 0 1 7. Additional information about GMVA will be made available in mid-January 2017.

Additional information about N RAO/EH TC will appear in the ALMA Ca ll for Proposa ls (M a rc h 2 1 ).

• As for Large Programs, mm-VLBI Proposals may designate any number of co- PIs.

• VLBI observations that include ALMA will occur in March/April 2018while ALMA is in a relatively compact antenna configuration, with up to thirty-seven 12-m antennas in the phased array.

• Given that the outcome of 3-mm VLBI Cycle 4 proposals, scheduled in April 2017, is unlikely to be known before the ALMA Cycle 5 proposal deadline, PIs of such proposals may resubmit their proposals in Cycle 5 for the case that the Cycle 4 observations are unsuccessful. No resubmission to the GMVA network is needed in such cases.

• Maximum baselines for the antenna configurations will vary from 0.25 km to 15 km; the planned configuration sc he dule will be released by 1 Fe brua r y 2017 and published in the Proposerʼs Guide

Cycle 5 Capabilities

9 0 -de g sw it ching for side ba nd se pa rat ion only for TDM and wide FDM spw (1875 MHz bandwidth)For Band 9

& 10 (DSB) it will effectively double the bandwidth from 8 GHz to 16 GHz per polarization from the DSB receivers.

Cycle 5 non-st a nda rd (up t o 2 0 % )

• Band 8, 9 & 10 observations

• Band 7 observations with maximum baselines > 5 km

• Longest baseline configuration (16 km) in all Bands (Note in 2017 Jan: it will become standard)

• All polarization observations

• Spectral scans

• Bandwidth switching projects (less than 1GHz aggregate bandwidths over all spectral windows)

• Solar observations

• VLBI observations

• User-specified calibrations (user defined calibrations selected in the OT)

• Astrometric observations

(15)

Observing modes (no change)

• Spectral line and continuum observations with the 12-m Array and the 7-m Array in all bands

• Single field interferometry (all bands) and mosaics (Bands 3 to 9) with the 12-m Array and the 7-m Array

• Single-dish spectral line observations in Bands 3 to 8

Cycle 5: Time constraints

• The 14-day minimum tolerance for specification of time constraints will be removed.

• PIs will be allowed to request simultaneity of observations in the 12-m and 7-m arrays. In that case the time estimated for the 7-m Array will be the same as for the 12-m Array.

• Stand-alone ACA proposals requesting only observations on the 7-m Array will be allowed to have time constraints.

(16)

16

N e w in Cycle 5

• Band 4 pola riza t ion*: Proposals will be accepted for Band 4 observations in all polarization modes, as for the other Bands.

Ba nd 5 observations: Proposals will be accepted for spectral line (12-m, 7m and Tot a l Pow e r arrays) and continuum (12-m and 7-m arrays) observations in Band 5. Pola riza t ion* will be offered on the 12-m array, as for the other Bands.

• Will start in March 2018

* non-st a nda rd

Cycle 5: Angular resolution

• In Cycle 5, PIs will be allowed to enter a range of angular resolutionsfor a given SG in the OT. The range should be justified in the proposal and be scientifically meaningful.

ALMA bands.

Observing Pressure

• The highest demand for observations is in the 2-6 h and 12- 19 h LST ranges, with low demand in the 7-9 h and 22-1 h LST ranges. Earlier cycles had similar distributions.

Proposers should be aware that proposals in less

subscribed LST ranges will have a higher probability of execution.

(19)

Resubmission

• Proposal teams that submit a Cycle 5 proposal to observe some or all SGs of a currently active but unfinished project will have the relevant SGs identified as a “resubmission” by ALMA. A SG is deemed a “resubmission” if it constitutes a duplication of an active SG following the rules specified in Appendix A of the Userʼs Policies and the PI of the relevant Cycle 4 project is a PI, co-PI or co-I of the corresponding Cycle 5 proposal.

(20)

Cycle 5 Phase 2

• The new workflow would therefore be as follows:

• PI downloadsapproved project

• OT automatically copies the Phase-1 SGs to Phase 2

• PI checks that the details are correct and edits within allowed limits, submitting a Change request if necessary

• PI submits - this counts as approval

• Deadline passes

• Observatory generates SBs automatically
