JANO 2011 Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund Donation Request

On March 11, 2011 a 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit Northeastern Japan and caused a massive tsunami that has been estimated as a wall of water over 30 feet tall – a wave that reached as far as 6 miles inland. The earthquake was strong enough to move the coastline of Japan by 8 feet and shift the earth’s axis by four inches.

The extent of the damage and loss to Japan, people’s homes, towns and lives is

immeasurable. A lifetime of memories and effort washed away in the span of less than an hour. Initial estimates are of close to 500,000 families displaced from their homes in mid-winter with lines for the basic items such as water. The reality is that the full extent of the impact to these people is unknown at this early stage.

What we do know is that the effort to rebuild the affected Japanese communities will take the effort of not just Japan but each and every one of us, including all of us from Northeast Ohio. It will take many years to return to these people just some of what they lost. And every penny you can donate will help these communities.

JANO, the Japanese Association of Northeast Ohio, is creating a 2011 Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. The actual dissemination of funds will be executed in consultation with the Detroit Consulate, our Corporate members, the Japanese School of Cleveland and other authorities to create the most positive impact for the dollar for affected communities.

We kindly request your donation to this fund. Please make your check out to JANO and mail it to the following address:
