Challenge 2 Mike’s Visit to Kyoto Temae
Temae is the procedure for performing chado. There are some styles to perform it.
In any of the styles,
the host and the guests enjoy the time as the only chance to meet each other.
This idea is called ichigo-ichie.
Chashitsu
A chashitsu, or tea room, is usually a room of four and a half tatami mats. It has a fireplace built into the tatami floor.
When the room is prepared for a temae, the guests are invited in through a small door.
Then the host and the guests share the precious time
through serving and drinking matcha, or powdered green tea.
Kakemono
A chashitsu has a special area called a tokonoma.
You will find a hanging scroll and a small case of flowers there. On the scroll, we often see wa-kei-sei-jaku or other words like that. The host explains the decorations.
In that way, he shows that he wants to welcome his guests.
