The 1964 Olympics

Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.

1. The 1964 Summer Olympics were held in Tokyo, Japan from October 10th to 24th, 1964. Not only

were these Olympics the first to be held in Japan, but they were also the first to be held in all of Asia. Although Tokyo had won the right to host the Olympics in 1940, the venue was changed to Helsinki, Finland because of Japan’s invasion of China. Ultimately, due to the outbreak of World War II, the Olympics were cancelled altogether.

2. Japan did well in the 1964 Olympics, coming third with 16 medals. First and second places went to the USA and the USSR, respectively. Perhaps the highlight for Japan was freestyle wrestler Osamu Watanabe’s stunning gold-medal victory. He surrendered no points to his opponent and retired as the only undefeated Olympic champion to date. Japan also attracted attention for winning gold in several judo events, as well as women’s volleyball. The Olympic Flame was lit by Yoshinori Sakai, who was born in Hiroshima on the day in 1945 when the atomic bomb destroyed that city.

3. Hosting the events was, psychologically, highly significant for the Japanese. The country was still in the process of recovering from the Second World War when it was awarded host status in 1959. Being granted the right to hold the summer Olympics symbolized a growing international recognition that Japan was well on its way to becoming a peaceful, economic powerhouse. Many major infrastructure projects were timed to coincide with the games, such as the construction of the world-famous Shinkansen bullet train. Also, many people rushed out to buy televisions to watch the games, and this too gave a great boost to the Japanese economy. In addition to the economic benefits, greenery was planted throughout Tokyo, and rivers and streets were cleaned – giving the city an aesthetic appeal that continues to this day.

4. In September, 2013, Tokyo was announced as the host of the 2020 summer games, beating out Istanbul and Madrid. As with the 1964 Olympics, many new infrastructure projects are being considered, including a new railway line that will link Haneda and Narita – Tokyo’s two main airports. Fortunately, many of the Olympic venues used in the 1964 games can be used again in 2020 – leading some to initially speculate that the next Tokyo Olympics would be among the cheapest Olympics in history. In recent months, however, the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee president acknowledged that the costs for building “temporary venues” will likely be much higher than originally expected.

Mathew C Perry

Each paragraph below is numbered for your convenience.

1 Mathew C Perry was born in 1794 in Rhode Island, America. He and his older brother (Oliver Hazard Perry) were the second generation of their family to join the Navy. Perry began his naval career at the tender age of 15 in 1809. His first duty was on the ship captained by Oliver.

2 In his early career Perry was called upon to complete many voyages in the name of America. His first voyage as captain was on the USS Shark, on which he claimed Key West off the coast of Florida in America.

3 During his time as captain on the USS Shark, Perry was tasked with building the second frigate for the US Navy, the USS Fulton, which was launched in December 1840. In this time Perry also oversaw the construction of the US naval gunnery, off the coast of New Jersey. The gunnery ran for about 2 years, between the years of 1849 to 1850.

4 By 1852, Perry had been promoted to Commodore and had completed many more voyages, along with helping the navy advance itself in technology and the training of all new recruits. This was around the same time that America’s desire to increase trading within the Orient begun to grow. Whilst at this time many ports were open to trading, ports in Japan were not open. This was due to the isolation policy that the government enforced over 220 years before this time. This wasn't going to stop the Americans though. They wanted to open diplomatic and trade relations with the Japanese and Perry was told to not take “no” for an answer.

5 Embarking from Norfolk, Virginia. Perry set sail with a fleet of some of America’s finest steam ships, including the black-hulled USS Susquehanna. Perry’s fleet arrived in Tokyo Bay on July 2nd 1853.

After receiving threats of force from the Americans, the Shogun government requested time to consider the message that Perry had bought with him from President Filmore. After a year of negotiations, the Treaty of Kanagawa was finally completed on March 31st 1854. This agreement assured good treatment
