Interface Conditions on “Gaps”: Argument-Adjunct Asymmetries and Scope Reconstruction•
In this paper, I argue, assuming the *-marking proposed by Chomsky and Lasnik (1993), that locality of movement is regulated by interface conditions that dictate how the * assigned to a member of a chain is treated at the interfaces. I argue, following Abe and Hornstein (2012), that at the phonetic interface, a locality violation marked with * persists only when the *-marked gap is unpronounced, and that at the semantic interface, a *-marked gap can get rid of its ill-marking by being converted into pro. I demonstrate that this mechanism explains a variety of argument-adjunct asymmetries and Longobardi’s (1987) generalization about scope reconstruction.•
