The Seventh Asian Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference (7AYGEC) September 12 – 14, 2012

Tokushima, Japan

WELCOME

The Japanese Geotechnical Society is pleased to invite you to the Seventh Asian Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference (7AYGEC), to be held at Tokushima University. This conference is the seventh in the series following the first in Bangkok (1991), the second in Singapore (1994), the third in Singapore (1997), the fourth in Seoul (2001), the fifth in Taipei (2004) and the sixth in Bangalore (2008). This conference aims at providing interactive platform for the young geotechnical engineers from across Asia.

Geotechnical Engineers and researchers below the age of 35 years from Asian countries and areas are invited to participate in the conference. Each of the National Geotechnical Societies in Asia is invited to nominate two participants from their countries and areas to submit written contributions and to present their works in the conference. It is also possible to accommodate few additional young geotechnical engineers to participate in the conference.

ABOUT TOKUSHIMA

Tokushima Prefecture, on the eastern side of the island of Shikoku, is connected to mainland Japan by the Akashi-Kaikyo and Naruto Bridges, and can be reached from Osaka in two and a half hours by highway bus (daily 48 buses), one hours and twenty minutes from Tokyo by air (daily 9 flights), two hours and forty-five minutes from Kansai Airport by highway bus (daily 10 buses) and two hours from Okayama by train (daily 16 trains). Tokushima City, the capital city of Tokushima Prefecture, has a population of about 260,000. The foundation for the present-day urban area was laid in 1587. The city is in northern Tokushima Prefecture where the Yoshino River and its tributaries create a delta. Being the major city in the area, industry, administration, economic activity, cultural and educational facilities have long been centered here and made the city prosperous. Tokushima City is blessed with a mild climate and rich agricultural products. The maximum and minimum temperatures in September are around 20 °C and 30 °C respectively. The Yoshino River, the largest in Shikoku, and other rivers running across the city and the elegant green of Mt. Bizan provide spiritual comfort for the citizens and relaxation for the visitors. Tokushima’s natural features and history created a distinctive culture: Awa Orodri dance, puppet theatre (Ningyo Joruri), indigo dyeing (Aizome)/textile manufacturing (Shijira-ori), wooden products, Sudachi (citrus fruit) etc.
