COURSE DESCRIPTION and OBJECTIVE:

This course is a continuation of Elementary Japanese I (Japanese 1), and lessons 6-11 will be covered. The key topics in this course are te-forms and short forms that will be indispensable to construction of various grammar patterns in Japanese. A different style of speech (informal style of speech) will also be introduced. The main objective of this course is for you to expand your communicative and grammatical proficiency, which enables you to speak and comprehend more complex Japanese. Another objective will be for you to further develop your reading comprehension skills by reading texts on various topics. Approximately 100 kanji will be introduced.

1. Commitment & Class Engagement

Learning a foreign language is similar to learning to play a musical instrument; regular practice, preferably everyday, is a necessity. Your commitment is essential for this course, and you are expected to review grammar points and study kanji everyday. Your commitment and class engagement will be assessed daily.

[1] Read the textbook, do the workbook, and self-correct your work daily [2] Arrive 5-10 minutes before the class begins and review the previous lesson [3] Participate ACTIVELY in class. Use Japanese in class.

[4] Don’t be shy! Don’t hesitate to ask questions. (Nothing is wrong with making mistakes.)

Class will be conducted assuming that students have reviewed the previous class and have done the corresponding workbook pages up to the date. This course encourages you to study at home for at least 1 hour every day.

Arriving late or leaving early is disruptive to the entire class; two late arrivals or early departures will be counted as one absence. 3 absences will result in your final grade being lowered by one letter grade.

It is your responsibility to catch up with any materials you missed during your absence. Get your classmate’s phone number and ask him/her to save the handouts and/or information given in the class you missed.

2. Homework Assignments

(1) Read the textbook as assigned BEFORE you come to class, so that you will maximize your understanding of grammar.

(2) Listen to the CD (the opening dialogues and the listening comprehension sections for the workbook) every day. Your goal is to become able to fully understand what they are saying without looking at the book; this helps you better prepare for the listening comprehension part on the chapter test.

(3) You are expected to do the workbook pages as assigned everyday. Be sure to check and SELF- CORRECT your work with the answer keys daily. Answer keys for the workbook assignments will be posted on our class website: https://sites.google.com/site/smcnihongo2/

Use a different color pen (red, blue, etc. but not black) when correcting your work, so that you can easily see your mistakes when you study before the test. (This allows you to study more effectively; you’ll know what you should focus on!) Completing the workbook in daily increments will lead to a better retention of what you learn. Avoid doing a whole chapter at once, because that does not help you learn anything.

 Note that everyday preparation saves your time for review and you feel good in class!

You will submit your workbook assignments on the date indicated in the class schedule. Your work will be graded as follows:

+ 15 points: excellent job with thorough self-correction (using a different color pen)

11 points: complete, but average

− 1-10 points: incomplete, not serious

(3)

Takase (Owens)

Your workbook assignment that is not self-corrected with a different color pen, even if it is complete, will result in a C. Late homework will NOT be accepted. You must place your workbook pages stapled together on the instructor’s desk before the class begins. (An unstapled submission will result in a reduction of 2 points!) Assignments that are turned in without class attendance will result in a reduction of 5 points. Homework assignments done during class will receive NO credit.

3. 作文

さくぶん

(Composition)

There will be 3 composition (essay) assignments. Topics and details will be announced in class.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

Academic dishonesty (plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration, cheating, etc.) will not be tolerated. A student who violates the academic integrity will be penalized and a permanent record of the violation will be kept on the student’s record. It is students’ responsibilities to read the Honor Code and Student Conduct Code. For the detailed explanation on academic honesty policy, please visit http://www.smc.edu/apps/docs.asp?Q=Projects/156 to download full text.

4. Lab Assignments

One hour Lab work per week (a minimum of 15 hours) is required. Please go to the language lab (D219) and complete the Lab work assigned for each week. There are a variety of activities

(grammar/conjugation exercises, listening comprehension exercises, videos, kanji/vocabulary practice, etc.) that help you master what you are currently learning in class. For details, see “Lab Assignments” on our Google site: https://sites.google.com/site/smcnihongo2/lab-assignments

The Lab work is essential in order to improve your listening & speaking proficiency, which will prepare you to do well in class and on the tests. The instructor will periodically review a report on your Lab work (how many hours you have done, when, etc.) and 10 points will be given on each due date if you have completed the total required lab hours by the day indicated on the schedule.

5. Quizzes and Exams

There will be 6 vocabulary quizzes, 6 kanji quizzes, and a chapter test after each chapter. All tests are cumulative. There will be 3 oral tests. A guide for oral tests will be distributed in class.

POP QUIZZES:

I will periodically give unannounced quizzes to make sure you are keeping up with your work.

(4)

NO MAKE-UP POLICY:

No make-up will be given for vocabulary quizzes, kanji quizzes, and chapter tests, except for medical emergencies accompanied by an official documentation from an appropriate healthcare professional or for legitimate reasons as defined under college policy (such as jury duty).

*If you anticipate a legitimate absence on the date of a chapter test, you MUST request a make-up in advance, not afterwards. Also, please be advised that any make-up test scores will result in a 10% automatic deduction.

*** NO MAKE UP WILL BE GIVEN FOR ORAL TESTS & THE FINAL EXAM. *** You MUST take oral tests/final exam on the scheduled day, not before/after the date.

CLASSROOM PLEDGE:

Please be respectful of the classroom environment and refrain from behavior that might be disturbing or distracting.

1. Cell phone Please turn off your cell phone and DO NOT USE your phone during class. If your phone rings, if you text, and/or if you use your phone, you will be penalized by a deduction of 5 points.

2. Food Eating candy, food, etc. and chewing gum are NOT allowed during class.

E-MAIL COMMUNICATION:

Please note that the college is only going to communicate with you through your SMC email address ([email protected]). Please check your SMC email account regularly, so that you will not miss important announcements.

GRADE LOGS:

Please keep track of your daily scores on the class schedule/grade logs, so that you can tell how you are doing in the class at all times. I will periodically report your total score to you. Make sure that your total and my total are the same.
